Do You Love Your Toaster?

In the discussion following my recent post about my re-found love of waffles, Jamie asks about feeding the masses at breakfast time:
Danielle…or any mom of many, for that matter…do you have just one waffle maker? or several? or how do you make waffles in a timely fashion for the whole brood?? I LOVE the idea of homemade waffles and know my ten little ones would as well, but dread the notion of standing at it all morning to make everyone’s breakfast. Would love to know thoughts on this…same problem with making toast. I’m ready to add a second 4-slice toaster to my pantry, if only I had more room for all these great gadgets.
I responded to her waffle question in the combox, but I wanted to post her toaster question here in order to solicit some reader ideas.
Our very cool, retro-style, 4-slice Cuisinart toaster just bit the dust, and I am beginning to look for a new one. I was at the store this morning and could have picked one up, but part of me is holding back because I would love to find a magic appliance that toasts more than 4 slices of bread at a time and doesn’t take up too much room on my kitchen counter.
I remember these amazing contraptions from my college cafeteria days, but am not quite ready to plunk down $1400 for my family’s breakfasting convenience.
I am beginning to suspect that I am making this whole “toast” thing more complicated than I need to. Didn’t our grandmas make large batches of toast on baking sheets in the oven? I think so. And during these toaster-less days while my family waits for me to make up my mind about my latest kitchen appliance, we have been doing the same. Maybe I’ll just buy a cute little 2-slice toaster and save it for special occasions.
