Dressed for Autumn

What do you wear in the cooler weather?

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.

I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.

One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity leave, I hope you’ll indulge me in some fashion talk in honor of the imminent autumn.

Here’s what I like about spring and fall, the transitional seasons: nearly every piece of clothing I own is wearable.

Oh, not the formal dresses I saved from college. Not my maternity clothes (this year, anyway). And it’s still a little warm for wool sweaters yet. (I can hardly tolerate wool, but in Michigan you’ve got to have a couple wool cardigans for those single-digit temperatures when the heater chugs all day long and still can’t keep the house at 70°.)

So no formals, no belly panels, and no wool, but pretty much everything else is fair game. I don’t have to put my Bermuda shorts or summer-weight skirts into storage yet, and I can pull out my long-sleeved tops and light jackets. It’s fun!

My summer look is pretty one-note: I wear skirts or shorts with short-sleeved t-shirts or tops. On my feet: flip-flops or sandals.

Fall brings variety. With shorts I’ll wear a long-sleeved tee and cute sneakers. A skirt pairs with a light sweater. And all my short-sleeved tops suddenly go with jeans and ballet flats.

(I wear my ballet flats like crazy in the fall, all too aware that I’ll soon have to trade them in for boots.)

Add a denim or corduroy jacket, and I’m good to go. And so happy, after all these months of skirts and tees, to be mixing it up a little!

What do you like to wear in the autumn?
