Thank you for this update Lisa, it’s interesting how we get to follow one of the ‘leaders’ in faith and media as you travel around our wonderful country sharing the message from place to place. As you know, I’ve been to Franciscan about five or six years in a row. God willing, I’ll be there in a couple months for another great conference. It does seem that place is anointed ground. The story of its turn around and the march to prominence is found in Fr. Michael Scanlan’s revised book LET THE FIRE FALL. Good reading. Blessings.
Fabulous Franciscan

Well, I’ve begun to get over my sadness at not being with all of my favorite moms at this past Saturday’s big event. Part of what helped to ease the sting was the wonderful time I had at the Franciscan University Media and Faith Conference in Steubenville. Together with Jeff Young (aka the Catholic Foodie) and our host Fr. Seraphim Beshoner, I spent the weekend interacting with Communications Arts students, faculty, invited speakers and conference attendees.
I’ve heard so much about “Steubenville” for the past several years, but I honestly wondered what it would really be like when I had a chance to encounter the University for myself. Jeff and I were invited to stay in the lovely guest quarters of the Friary. The priests were so kind and welcoming - it gave me a tiny little taste of the beauty of living in community. The students we met were incredible: talented, inquisitive, polite, and talented. I can’t say enough about the incredible Communications Arts Faculty! Doctors David Schaefer, James Coyle, Eugene Gan, and Wayne Lewis are preparing a group of future leaders for our Church who will be technically adept with the latest tools, creative in their approach, and prepared to communicate the Church’s teachings and society’s news and entertainment with respect and diligence.
My trip to Steubenville had several highlights - along with the conference itself, I loved my tour of the hillside area that contains the Tomb of the Unborn, the Stations of the Cross, and the Portiuncula Chapel. Celebrating the Eucharist at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday in the standing room only chapel on campus was another amazing moment for Jeff and me.
I know now firsthand why people speak so highly of Franciscan University. I hope I will have the chance to visit campus again some time soon, but until then I leave Steubenville with my soul refreshed and my commitment to communicating the Good News with my full heart and soul renewed. A special note of thanks again to my host and friend Fr. Seraphim Beshoner, my partner for the presentation Jeff Young, and Dr. Wayne Lewis for his kind invitation!

That’s my Alma Mater! My husband and I moved to New Hampshire last year, and how I miss that place! Glad you enjoyed your stay
My Alma Mater, too! Class of ‘95…BA in Communication Arts….Thank you Drs. Schaefer, Coyle, and Lewis. You taught me sooo much!!!! Although I’m a homeschooling, SAHM to 4, I use my FUS education everyday. I’m forever grateful to have graduated from there. Btw, I’m from NH, too.
As another graduate of the University, I just wanted to say that I’m glad you enjoyed your trip and your post made me so nostalgic… oh how I love and miss Steubenville!
But, I am grateful to God everyday for the experiences and formation I gained from my 4 years at Franciscan. I’m hoping to go back one day for a conference!
How I miss FUS! I’m a Humanities and Catholic Culture ‘96 alum! I still haven’t had a chance to bring my husband. We’ll have to wait for our overseas “tour” to finish first. I just received an email about Fr. Scanlan’s retirement. What a holy man! A testament to what wonders God can do with a simple “yes!”
