Favorite Things

a few of them

It was with entirely too much glee that I barreled down the highway this afternoon, heading home after a productive trip to the Big Box Store.

I was there to get a few more school supplies, but had some other happy success as well. Do you ever have one of those trips where you don’t have to buy an overwhelming amount of stuff, but what you do get makes you feel really good inside? That was my trip today.

Today I grabbed a few t-shirts for Henry, he who has sprouted overnight. Just last week he was wearing a 3T t-shirt and (ahem) a 24 month shorts. Today, suddenly, 3T was a belly shirt not fit for public viewing. So a few new well-fitting tees. I also found a new water cup for me and some chocolate ice-cream for the resident infirm.

But what I realized, as I pulled into my driveway, was that of all the things I bought I was most excited about something else entirely—my cleaning supplies.

Yes, way too excited.

But I didn’t care—I pushed aside any random feeling of embarrassment (of which there were none) and I grabbed my No. One Top Favorite Cleaning Product out of the bag—my giant bottle of Clorox Bleach Spray. I took the spray and headed to my walk-in shower where I proceeded to (with adequate ventilation) spray down the tile to my heart’s content. I am now reveling in the clean, clean smell of bleach and it makes my whole house smell like I’ve been scrubbing for hours on end.

Also on the list of Happy Things: a new, gigantic box of Swiffer dusters and some lemon scented dishwasher detergent.

Is this lame? I don’t think so! In fact, I’m so sure I’m not alone that I invite you to share your favorite household cleaning items with the rest of the class. What simple household items bring you joy and pleasure?

My all time favorite is Mrs. Meyers!

SOFT SCRUB!!! hehe When we moved into our house last year, one of my friends came to help clean and brought brought a bottle of it for me. I was so super excited! lol

Wow Rachel, your son sounds a lot like mine!  My son is so skinny that at age 3 years 8 months he still wears 24-month pants and shorts (and truthfully, he could fit into much smaller sizes, but they would be too short for him).  Even some 24-month pants won’t stay up because he’s so skinny.  But last December he went up three shirt sizes in a month;  he started off wearing 18-month shirts and a month later he was in 3T!  That was the first time in his life he ever had a growth spurt.  I was really glad that the growth spurt was in his torso instead of his legs, because if his legs grew that fast I would never be able to find pants that were long enough and would also stay up on him!

Clorox or Lysol Wipes, especially for the bathroom.  I’ve actually put them on my Christmas list for my mom and sister who say they don’t know what to buy me!!

I also LOVE using vinegar to clean with.  It’s got disinfectant properties and the smell goes away after a few minutes.

Without a doubt, anything by Mrs. Meyers.

I’m with Allison - vinegar is the best thing ever. The highlight of last week for me was when I had the idea to bring my vinegar spray bottle in the shower with me and scrubbed every corner of the tub while showering.

Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser!!!!  It works like….magic!!!

Yesss!!! Best product ever. Cleans odd things great. Especially the while rubber on Converse and sneakers. I’ve got everyone hooked on that product. Love it.

I do enjoy using apple cider vinegar for a quick clean up of the floor that I know my 1 year old can crawl in.  Baking soda for cleaning toliets because the kids can help (1, 4 & 6) and I’m not going to make them sick. I can squirt vinegar afterwards around bowl to disinfect. The best is general purpose cleaner solution of a couple drops of tea tree oil (anti bacterial properties) a little bit of dr bronner’s unscented soap and water.  It cleans, disinfects, is super cheap and smells good.  My husband thinks it gives that “clean” smell.  Probably the thing I love best are cheap, safe cleaners that are bought concentrated and so I don’t have lots of packaging and I use pretty much everywhere so it’s simple!

My best purchase is an amazing cloth that wipes away soap scum without cleaners!  I LOVE LOVE that thing!!!

Janet,
I second your favorites of vinegar, baking soda, tea tree oil & Dr. Bronner’s—because they work so well, but primarily because they are safe for little ones, with no artificial scents or harsh chemicals.  Just walking down the laundry/soap/cleaning product aisle in the stores smells like a chemical overload with all those harsh ingredients.

Where do you find tea tree oil and Dr. Bronner’s - and what proportions do you use?

What do you use for laundry?

I use a homemade laundry detergent recipe that uses Fels Naptha soap, washing soda (Arm & Hammer), Borax powder, & essential oil (I like lavender or eucalyptus) or tea tree oil.  I have a new recipe I hope to try soon that uses Dr. Bronner’s peppermint castille soap.

Believe it or not, I am using Dawn dishwashing liquid just about everywhere in the bathroom.  Got new fixtures and a new shower and all the regular cleaning supplies were listed as big “no no’s” on the fixture insert.  Works great on soap scum.  I also use white vinegar, diluted 50 % with water for the laminate floors, fixtures. glass stove top, windows etc.  Something else I love is Borax - I used to put it in the toilets because it was safe for kids to do the cleaning.  Now I mostly use it with laundry as an additive to smelly loads.
