Nope. We live in S. Texas about 150 miles from the border. No one here celebrates Cinco de Mayo with the exception of a few of the larger Mexican restaurants that are draws for tourists. A few bars around town have cheap margaritas too.
5/5 usually closely follows Fiesta here in SA which is a celebration of another completely obscure occurrence in history and most of the town is fairly all partied out…at least for another couple weeks.
Feliz Cinco de Mayo

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Are you celebrating?
As someone who is married to a Mexican citizen (my husband’s mother was born and raised in Mexico City), I can attest to the fact that almost no one in Mexico actually celebrates this day. But we gringos? We love it!
We drove by a Mexican restaurant tonight to find the parking lot packed full, with cars lining up along the road leading to the restaurant. It was amazing. I was so glad we weren’t planning on eating there. But it looked like everyone was having a grand time.
As for me, I am about to whip up a classic margarita for me and my man and I thought I would share this delicious recipe from the Food Network. Click over there to find ten very interesting margarita recipes, including one that features jalapenos!

its a victory yes, but in a war they lost!
sept 15/16 is when the real party is
Lina, where did you study? I got to spend a month studying in Puebla, where the battle took place! Fascinating story, but yeah, they totally lost the war.
queretaro, queretaro - 2 hours north of mexico city. i never did make it to puebla, but i really wanted to!
We also don’t celebrate it, but I was inspired by other cookie bloggers to do something special. You can check it out here: http://ourfieldoflittleflowers.blogspot.com/2011/05/cinco-de-mayo.html
Ole!
We aren’t Mexican, but, we had a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta last evening as a fundraiser. Our daughter’s high school choir received a special invite to perform at the Festival of the Aegean in Greece summer 2012. We have to raise $3000 per child, so we’re getting creative with what we do. It was fun! Our choir performed 4 songs, 2 Mexican, and the dance students (performing arts Charter school!) performed a Mexican folkloric dance and Flamenco. We also had a dance teacher teach salsa to guests. We only had a small crowd, but we still raised almost $3000! 29 studnets to go!
We usually make something special for dinner, although now that I think about it we eat Mexican food a lot so I don’t know that it’s really out of the ordinary. Last night I made fish tacos which was a first for me, so I guess that was special. They were tasty! If I wasn’t pregnant, I totally would have been down with a margarita, too.
