Find a Fit That Flatters

Nordstroms videos show you how

I imagine we’ve all faced the challenge at some point of finding clothes that successfully meet the needs of both our unique senses of style as well as our personal standards of modesty. Department stores have long been chock full of barely-there pieces while magazines try to convince us that confident women aren’t afraid to show a whole lot of skin.

Despite these attempts by the powers-that-be, women have continued to demand that classy options be made available to us and the designers seem to be listening, if only in the interest of supporting their bottom line. More and more modest, attractive pieces are being offered with each passing year and so I think our challenge in dressing modestly is changing.

There’s no denying that the culture war rages on, but I don’t necessarily think that the primary problem faced by women who desire to dress with dignity is a lack of options. Instead, I think it has become a problem of a lack of knowledge.

It’s been argued (and correctly, I believe) that dressing modestly is not merely an issue of not showing too much skin, but also one of not drawing undue attention to ourselves. There are a number of ways that a woman can inadvertently do this but I believe the easiest mistake to make is to squeeze ourselves into ill-fitting clothes.

It’s true that many young women today seem to have bought into the misguided message that less is more when it comes to fashion but an equal number of them simply seem to never have been taught how to dress their unique figure. An outfit that pulls, bunches, rides up or is otherwise problematic as a result of poor fit is almost as distracting as attire that is scandalous, don’t you think?

Thankfully, there are some very simple rules that we can learn and apply in order to avoid such issues. These rules can help us all to select garments that highlight our best features. We don’t want to be immodest but that certainly doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun with our clothes!

The other nice thing about having these rules in your back pocket is that you can pull them out wherever you happen to be shopping! They’ll benefit you equally whether you’re shopping at a high-end boutique or your funky local thrift store. These rules are also flexible enough to allow each lady to apply them to her own personal standard of modesty.

There are numerous websites, podcasts and videos that attempt to address this issue but my favorite resource, by far, is a series of short videos produced by Nordstroms.com. They are simple, straightforward and easy to understand. I’ve posted a video above, detailing how to select a dress that best suits your figure but if you head over to the Nordstroms YouTube channel you will find videos detailing how to find flattering jeans, dress petite and plus-sized figures, choose effective shapewear, and more!

Do take a peek! I’d love to hear what you think, ladies! Take care!
