First Communion Question

As we enjoy the beauty and traditions of First Holy Communion season, I recently received an email from someone who was requesting information on the various means of receiving the Eucharist at First Communion celebrations. In her parish, first communicants are strongly encouraged to receive the Eucharist in the hand at their First Communion. Families in the parish have questioned this practice and she is looking for feedback.
The question sent me to a few of my favorite “holy experts”, including the wonderful Deacon Tom Fox of Catholic Vitamins. In his thoughtful response to me, Deacon Tom shared many words on the Church’s teachings in this regard. His most wonderful reminder was the importance of sharing with our children (and of reminding ourselves) that Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist is the Source and Summit of our faith. What a tremendous gift we as parents share with our children, but also what a vast responsibility as well!
At the moment, I am reading the terrific book 7 Secrets of the Eucharist by author Vinnie Flynn. If you are seeking to increase your own personal devotion to the Eucharist, I highly recommend this concise and yet impactful book.
Can you offer any information on how children in your parish receive their First Communion - by hand, on the tongue, or as they prefer? Also, do you have any great books or resources on the Eucharist to share with us?
