First Quarter Conquered

I’ve mentioned before that the first three months of a baby’s life are not my favorite time with him.
Before Blaise was born, Bryan and I had managed to carve a routine with Camilla’s bedtime so that we had a couple hours each day to be alone together, tidy the house, and relax before our own bedtime.
Blaise’s arrival sent that out the window. With two kids instead of one, we were on the move from dawn until dusk and falling into bed exhausted, hoping there wouldn’t be too many nighttime wake-ups.
It was like that for quite a while. Ninety days is a short period of time in retrospect, but it feels very long while you’re living it.
Then suddenly it was yesterday, the 19th. Blaise turned three months old. We celebrated with some cuddles, and while I rubbed my soft cheek against his head I realized that things are much easier than they were two months ago.
Blaise still wakes up multiple times a night, but he no longer fusses when he does; it’s been weeks since I had to do a 4:00am calming march around the living room. His reflux is getting better. His diaper changes are far less frequent. At sixteen pounds, he’s no longer tiny and fragile. He’s becoming more interactive, and is an exceptionally cheerful and smiley baby.
Last night after Camilla went to bed, Bryan held a sleeping Blaise and played on the laptop while I talked to my sister on the phone and folded laundry. It was a peaceful moment. Slowly, things are getting back to normal.
I’m really enjoying having a three-month-old. And as I breathe a big sigh of relief that we’ve made it this far, I love knowing that it’s just going to get better from now on.
