Fresh

It’s spring!
Well, kind of. Here in our part of Michigan, we have highs in the 30s for the next week, and can expect at least one or two more snowfalls before the warmer season begins in earnest. Today I let the kids go outside to play and they wore heavy jackets, hats, and mittens.
But the winter’s snow accumulation has thawed. Tree branches sport tiny buds. The ground is getting softer, and with every rainfall the grass is slowly greening.
When I was in elementary school I loved recess time during March and April. I was sure I could *smell* spring coming, even when we were still playing in snowdrifts. Twenty years later, I still pick up whiffs of it, a cleanness in the air. Fresh things are coming. New life is coming.
I realize that much of the world doesn’t have seasons the way we do, and sometimes I wish we lived somewhere more temperate. But mostly I’m glad to live here, where we see the world fade every autumn and watch it be reborn every spring. The changes are drastic, like real life and death, and each year the greenness of this season brings me concrete reminders of God’s goodness.
And seeing it through my children’s eyes just makes it even better. They’re thrilled to be able to spot the grass again, and love to make plans for things they’ll do when it’s warmer. With even a spot of sunshine, they want to eat their lunch on the back porch, enjoying breezes after months of being cooped up inside.
(The quiet time I get while they’re cavorting outside - that’s just a bonus.)
Even though it’s not quite here yet, thank you, God, for spring.
