From Washington State to Washington D.C for Life

This last Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to interview three members of the Pro-Life Crossroads Walk. Young College age students who give up their summer to walk from Seattle, Washington to Washington D.C. in prayer and sacrifice for Pro-Life. A long, long road.

During the week they take turns walking five mile shifts. There are eleven of them (I think) who started from Seattle, though they came from all parts of the nation—strangers when they began they will have become life time friends after the end of such a long, hard but faith filled journey.

When they arrrived at the Monastery for the radio recording, they had been fifteen days on the road ... they were tired but full of smiles, joy and enthusiasm for the gift to stand up for their beliefs. Allie shared during the interview. “It is hard, but we do it for the babies.”

On the weekends they speak at parishes, schools and other places where their Pro-life message can be shared. I was so enthused by their pilgrimage journey that I asked if I could keep in contact with them along the way—and share it with you ... on radio and blog—their epic journey.

August 15th is the final day of their travels.. so every few days - from now till then -  I will share a picture, some thoughts and hopefully a bit of audio as I check in with Martha and the others on their long, long way to D.C.

Super!  Praise God for these young adults!  I wish I was walking with them.  I will pray for them each and every day.
I look forward to seeing pictures and reading more about them.
Thank you for sharing this story!

I was privileged to be at Franciscan U. of Steubenville for 5 years with students who annually did these walks. I always was moved by their self-sacrifice and great motivation. Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, now Chancellor and the refounding President of FUS, himself told us how at first he was skeptical of this idea, but gave it permission and has seen that it worked. As perhaps you have said, the originating students were inspired at World Youth Day ‘93 in Denver when JP II said, “Woe to you, America, if you do not defend life!” They felt impelled to find some way to act on their pro-life convictions. Many outreaches have developed like the sharings almost every night or in every town that asks for them to stop along the way. I think that there are other groups like ALL (American Life League) that has also started such walks, and of course many other outreaches. Truly, the youth are giving witness to the whole Church of the sanctity of every human life, and doing an important part to win over those not yet convinced in our country and beyond.
