Get Down the Pounds

A friend of mine recently got the last 15 pounds off to reach her goal weight. She hasn’t looked this trim since before she started having kids (13 years ago) and when I asked her how she did it, she had two words: Weight Watchers.
My friend, like me, has gotten to an age where keeping track of food intake is just as important as exercise, at least where weight loss is concerned. In my twenties, I had baby after baby and would always be back to my goal weight within six months. I gave very little thought to what I ate beyond “hey, I better start eating healthy!” and Voila! Mission accomplished.
Then came Henry, the first baby I had in my 30s. Totally different story. Just deciding that I wanted to fit in my jeans again wasn’t doing the trick. I caught on to this when Henry was nearing his 2nd birthday. “Wow”, I thought one day, “this weight isn’t coming off by itself.” So I hunkered down and started thinking about my food intake and I upped the exercise. I worked very hard to get back to where I wanted to be.
And now I’m getting back in that season after having baby Isabel almost six months ago. I really try to be balanced in my approach—I don’t want to rush into things, but I also don’t want to sit back like I did with Henry and just wait for something to happen. I don’t want two years to go by while I wait on the weight.
So last night, for the first time (and inspired by my aforementioned friend) I joined a “weight loss” group. We are meeting very briefly once a week to encourage each other and weigh in. This is totally new for me, but I’m very excited.
What about you? Have you ever done anything like this? What works best for you to achieve your weight-loss goals?
