Giving Thanks

When I was growing up, every year on my birthday my mom would give me a pack of thank you cards as one of my gifts. This was her not-so-subtle way of reminding me to show gratitude, in the form of a written note, to any friends and family who had given me a present.
Her methods worked; to this day each of my siblings does an incredible job of sending thank you notes whenever I give a gift, including Christmas (which I’m not quite as good at!).
Since Isabel’s birth, we have had a steady flow of gifts and I am so blessed and humbled by all the generosity. But now it’s time to pay the piper; I have a ton of thank you notes to write! I don’t want to miss the opportunity to tell each gift giver how much I appreciate this kind deed. Of course people say not to worry about sending a note, but I just can’t help myself—I want them to know how I feel.
Truthfully, I always enjoy getting thank you notes. It’s not that I want to hear that someone recognized my efforts, but it’s always nice to know that a) the gift was in fact received and b) that it was something worthwhile. While it can seem like a lot, it’s actually not too much work to jot a little note to say thanks.
Which reminds me that I absolutely need to get back on the ball in doing this with the boys, so when they are older offering this form of gratitude won’t seem too overwhelming!
