God Sightings Along the Shore

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. Anne Frank
Without a doubt, when I walk along the shore listening to the roar of waves of the whistle of the wind, I can feel God’s presence with an astounding certainty. One of the blessings of this week is the treat of being able to walk the coast twice per day.
For me, the ocean has always contained a small hint of God’s majesty and power. Yesterday, on my evening walk, I tuned my eyes and ears in to sense just a few other “God sightings” and came away with the following:
A perfect clam shell, placed just so, that reminded me of angels’ wings
The delighted squeals of a two-year-old blond, digging a hole with her Daddy
A tribe of seabirds, daintily running the shoreline in formation
The green sea foam that speckled the edge of the tide
The wind, blowing ferociously – sightless but unmistakably present
An intact sand dollar – an endless circle of beauty
The rolling tide of waves, crashing rhythmically
There were so many more, such tangible reminders of God’s infinite perfection in the beauty of His creation. I know in my heart that the lure of the ocean will always be a strong presence in my life, since walking the coastline always draws me closer to the God who loves me so much despite all of my shortcomings.
Do you have a place in your life where “God Sightings” are strong and tangible? Perhaps it’s a local trail or even your backyard garden. Give yourself the gift this week of spending some time out of doors with your family, enjoying God’s masterpieces of nature. I’d love to hear about your favorite places and how you sense the presence of God in them!
