Hats Off to Cuteness & Sun Protection

Wallaroo UPF 50+ Collection is a Winner

Hats can be as addictive as shoes. One year, when we were planning a summer vacation, Dan shopped for sun hats for the both of us beforehand. After he made a few purchases, I remember telling him, “I think we’ve exhausted our hat budget for the month.”

Which was a joke. Because we have no hat budget, of course.

But as the temperatures grow warmer and the summer approaches, I am beginning to think that maybe we should have a hat budget. Because hats are cute. And stylish. And they can protect you and your loved ones from skin cancer.

One line of summer hats that recently caught my eye is the Wallaroo UPF 50+ collection. These wide-brimmed hats are made of special fabric that blocks 97.5% of the sun’s ultroviolet rays. And they just so happen to be adorable.

I don’t know about you, but I hate putting sunscreen on my kids’ faces. Especially with all the concern about the safety of sunscreens that has been making headlines in recent summers, I really like the idea of protecting sensitive skin with fabric instead of chemicals.

The Wallaroo children’s collection has a variety of cute-cute-cute styles to choose from, but I fell in love with a few of the women’s hats as well. These hats aren’t cheap, but neither is sunscreen, and especially with a grown-up hat, you could get several seasons’ worth of use from a single purchase.

How about you? How do you plan to protect yourself and your kids from the sun this summer?

1,000 times cute on that Pink Alligator! Off to shop!

I love hats! More women should wear them! They protect your face and make an outfit more polished. Winter or summer, I rarely go out without one on. I wear hats to Mass (I don’t like mantillas) and outside to keep my head warm or protect my fair complexion from the sun, depending on the season. I just bought a stunning cloche hat from Seeberger. It was a little pricey but totally worth it. I am so tempted to go back to the hat shop for another style in the same range (http://www.seeberger-hats.com). I also always wear moisturiser with sunscreen. My children have been blessed with olive complexions, but they wear cute little bucket hats in the sun and are really good about keeping them on.

Oh, I just realised Seeberger don’t have stockists in the US.

My girls wear Sunday afternoon hats. (http://www.sundayafternoons.com/store/kids-play-hat.html) I love that they are adjustable and so will last a while, at least as long as we don’t loose them. We also have long sleeved UPF-50 shirts from a variety of places. (http://macyfron.com/?p=960)

Here in China many women carry umbrellas or parasols. Last summer we were in Shanghai and I finally gave in and started carrying one. It was wonderful. I wasn’t sweating in the 100 degree weather under a hat and I enjoyed a bit of portable shade. Can I get away with this in America?

Mary Poppins? Why not?

Thanks, I was looking for hats.  And now MY family’s hat budget is spent for the year.
