Head Over Heels

Learning from a fall...

I’ve had a topsy turvy few days since I took a spill in my kitchen late last week. It happened in the midst of the morning rush, and thankfully Adam was nearby to help me get up while my ER doctor husband slumbered peacefully upstairs. The cause? A combination of rushing and clumsiness. At the time when I fell, I didn’t think anything more than my pride had been injured, but as the weekend progressed my neck pain grew and became pretty unbearable. I spent the better part of the past few days on the couch, slathered in smelly “muscle rub” and praying for relief and pain relievers.

Today, I’m upright at my desk and things are resuming their normal pace. But my little slip up was a reminder that I am aging, and that sometimes I just need to slow down a bit. I’m otherwise so healthy these days that sometimes I need a reminder like this to remember to count my blessings.

Here are a few other things my little accident taught me:

*  Have a backup plan—Just like that “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” Lady, I needed help and am thankful that Adam was nearby. For your elderly relatives, or for you if you live alone, make it a point of checking in with loved ones regularly.

* Slow down—Doing two things at once can be a recipe for disaster. Better to take a bit longer than to have an accident—this also holds true behind the wheel of a car!

*  Give yourself time to recover—If you do have an injury, take the time you need to get healthy.

*  Ask for help—We moms are the worst at this one, but if you find yourself ailing, take advantage of friends’ and family members’ offers for help. Remember how you feel when you help others, and let them have this moment of grace by consenting to accept help with routine chores and errands.

I’m happy to be on the road to recovery, but my little kitchen accident was a reminder to take it a bit easier… Hopefully that reminder will last at least a few weeks!

p.s. Please excuse the photo… I saw it and just couldn’t resist!

Lisa, glad to hear you’re on the mend.  Thanks for posting these tips.  “We ain’t gettin’ any younger!”  Feel better.

Thanks Sandi! Not any younger, and definitely not wiser…

Oh, I’m so sorry about the length of recovery, Lisa! Thanks for humbly sharing with us your wisdom… great blog!

Was thinking something must be wrong because you seemed to be missing in action last last few days. I thank God you are feeling better!

Sorry to hear about your injury Lisa.  I hope your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.

Lisa-

So glad you’re ok! Back / neck pain that lasts for days like that is terrible - you can’t get anything done. It has happened to me several times. You’re right - it completely rearranges your priorities. It’s like this message from the heavens saying, “Slow down. Be still and know that I am God”. As a type A control freak, it’s a very humble reminder that I’m not in charge.

That said, I admire all the good work you do, so I’m glad you’re on your feet again.

Lisa, I’m sorry you were injured and hope you heal quickly!  I had to tell you that I got a big laugh out of your photo!  I’d hate to see the doggie bag used to pick up behind THAT dog!

Sorry to hear about your injury Lisa!! Hopefully till now you recovered perfectly. Thanks for sharing this article. I very impressed by the kitchen tips you mentioned out here.
