Healthy, Strong and Fit

I’m not a viewer of Oprah’s daily show, but today it’s been pretty difficult not to hear the news about her “coming out” in the upcoming January issue of O The Oprah Magazine regarding her very public battle with her weight.
The cover and a brutally honest essay, which will appear in the January issue of O Magazine, chronicles her struggle with an out-of-balance thyroid and how the condition gave her a “fear of working out.” Winfrey says that instead of trying to lose weight, her goal is to be strong, healthy and fit.
You Faith and Family Live! friends know that living a healthy lifestyle is one of my favorite blogging topics, so I wanted to come to you for your reaction to Oprah’s upfront attitude about sharing such a private topic. Since she lives such a public life with many people watching and commenting on her every move, I congratulate Oprah for her honesty and bravery in sharing about what surely is a very painful aspect of her life. I also applaud her for stating that in 2009 she wants to focus not on getting thin, but on becoming “healthy, strong and fit”.
As one who will never be graced with a super model’s physique, I’ve settled into a point in my life of trying to maintain a lifestyle that helps me see my body as a beautiful temple of God’s creation, and dong my best to treat it as such by eating in moderation, trying to exercise regularly and getting sufficient rest. Many, many days I fall short of these goals - I can’t imagine what it would feel like to be Oprah and to proclaim my shortcomings so publicly.
What reaction do you have to this story? Will Oprah’s openness about her weight impact you personally or change the way you view her? I’d love to hear your reaction!
