Hemlines and Happiness

Fashion Friday vol. 4

Every so often I stumble upon an item of clothing that I am so delighted by that I want to own it in every color and pattern available to me. Not that I actually get to indulge that desire, of course, but you know you’ve unearthed a treasure when you get that itch.

I feel that way every time I stop by Vintage Hem, a company that has resurrected the classic petticoat to bless the modern modest woman.

I am always appreciative when someone creates a product designed to safeguard a woman’s virtue but when they manage to do so while also adding a touch of panache to an outfit, I am doubly delighted. Oh, and when that product comes about a result of a designer’s love affair with the past, well, then I’m triply thrilled! A modern day petticoat? Does it get any better than that? Not for this vintage-lovin’ gal!

With a small army of wild little ones in my care every day, a skirt with adequate length is a must. I do try to buy skirts and dresses that have a comfortable hem to begin with, but whether due to shrinkage, weight gain, or an infatuation with a skirt or dress that leaves too little to the imagination, my closet does possess a few items that could use a little help in the length department. Vintage Hem’s petticoats offer that extra bit of insurance I require to play with my kids with the abandon we all desire.

My dear friend, Katie Rose, recently pointed out that petticoats are a valuable addition to one’s maternity wardrobe, as well.

I haven’t yet had the chance to wear my Vintage Hem petticoat during pregnancy but I know all too well the experience of peeking in the mirror only to find your hem to be elevated several inches higher in the front than in the back! Pregnant bellies are as cute as buttons but they can be positively merciless when it comes to a pregnant Mama’s hemline! No gal wants to be self-conscious during pregnancy. I’m awkward enough as it is during that seemingly endless third trimester. The last thing I want to be worrying about is whether I’m giving the world an unsolicited peek at my skivvies!

I can think of no better time to add a bit of ruffle to your hemline than the upcoming holiday season. Not only will you look perfectly festive but should you happen to take a spill on account of the snow (or, ahem, eggnog), you may just recover with your dignity in tact.

But if not, at least you’ll look cute! That goes a long way towards softening the blow. Just trust me on that one, girls. wink

Those are adorable!!! I love the idea of being able to lengthen a short skirt or dress.

Also a friend of Katie’s, I must admit that when I first glanced at the picture and title of your post, my first thought was “hey!  you stole that from Katie!”

AHH!!! I’m SO excited about these.  They are so frilly & fun.  I will have to get me one.  I am moving back down to TX from NY so MORE reasons to wear skirts & dresses!!
