Homemade Play Doh

hours of fun for little hands

When I was a kid, my mother always made our Play Doh. I have fond memories of choosing the colors and squishing the still-warm dough between my fingers.

Early on in my own family life, I always made my kids’ Play Doh too. It’s really easy to do and a fun process for the kids.

Somewhere along the line, however, I started buying the ready-made stuff and I got out of the habit of making our own. And even then, it’s been a while since I bought any.

The other day, though, when I was making biscuits for dinner and my three littlest kids scrambled to the counter and fought over the tiny, pathetic, leftover bits of dough, I suffered a major bout of Mommy Guilt.

The very next day, I pulled out my mom’s old recipe and got to work making three batches—blue, yellow, and red. My preschoolers (and even some of the big kids) were beyond excited.

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon oil
1/4 cup salt
food coloring

Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until it forms a thick dough. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. Store in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are lots of different Play Doh recipes to try. Some new (to me) and interesting ones I found online were Kool Aid Play Doh, Corn Starch Clay, Cooked Clay Dough, and Peanut Butter Dough.

Why not plan some fun with your kids sometime soon?

Perfect timing! Thank you! My daughter asked for a particular Play-doh set for Christmas but not wanting to leave the others out I thought I would give them some extra jars. Now, I think I will make some for everybody! Plus, I get frustrated when they mix the store bought stuff all together but I think being able to make some more would alleviate that. BTW…did you know that Captain Kangaroo saved Play-doh? Google it.

I bought a whole bunch a few weeks back thinking it would be great for the littles to do while the big kids did school… they mixed it all together into a really revolting brown shade and left it out everywhere to get hard.
Maybe making one color will work better, they really do enjoy playing kitchen with their cutters and rollers.

This is my mom’s old recipe too and it is just so wonderful!

my mom always made us “edible playdough” ... the recipe is 1 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup honey, and 2 cups powdered sugar. mix in a bowl, using your hands. store in airtight. we loved it and i’m looking forward to making it for my kiddos in a year or two when they’re big enough!

Joelle—
