Honoring St. Joseph

Our little guy has a fever and a stuffy nose, and he’s awoken every forty-five minutes since his bedtime two hours ago.
All evening, my husband has been sprinting up to the bedroom at the first sound of each awakening. He picks up Blaise, shushes him, and rocks his warm little body back to sleep.
After the baby’s eyes have closed again, Bryan will gently lay him down, then lie next to him for a few minutes until he’s sure Blaise is soundly asleep. He closes the door quietly on the way out, then comes back downstairs, knowing he’ll likely have to repeat the process in another thirty-five minutes.
I’m sorry my baby is ill, but I can’t help thinking that my husband is honoring St. Joseph beautifully today. He’d much prefer to spend his evening some other way, but rather than frustration, he expresses sympathy for our poor feverish baby. He may not be excited to run up those stairs again, but he does it cheerfully and readily.
I have no idea how the dynamic in the Holy Family’s home looked. St. Joseph may never have rocked baby Jesus to sleep. But he served Jesus and Mary constantly, and I’m sure that from Heaven, he is glad for Bryan’s imitation of his service.
Tonight, I’m grateful for my dear spouse’s likeness to the patron saint of fathers, Jesus’ foster father. I pray that it will be a good reminder to me to imitate Jesus’ mother - on her feast days and every day.
