What a wonderful testament to the power of trusting in God and sharing His love. On a more personal note, I was happy to read that the boys refer to the Rogers as Mom and Dad and don’t feel as though having white parents was a detriment. My husband, daughter and I are white and our son is black. While I know he will likely encounter racism at some points in his life I believe that being well grounded and sure in the knowledge of his worth as a child of God and beloved son of ours that he will have a firm footing to withstand others’ fear and ignorance.
How Tithing Saved A ‘Lost Boy’

You may know the story of Lopez Lomong, the champion runner whose Olympic teammates elected him flagbearer for the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing. He was one of Sudan’s “Lost Boys,” abducted by guerillas in the middle of Mass one morning when he was six years old. His captors intended to make him a child soldier, but he and two friends escaped from prison camp through a hole in a fence and fled to Kenya on the backs of some older boys.
His is a marvelous story, but equally impressive are the foster parents who took him in. Barbara & Robert Rogers responded to a notice in their parish bulletin about the Lost Boys, and Lomong was only the first of six such young men they ended up fostering (two years previously they’d taken in an entire family of refugees from Kosovo for a time, and they were known in their parish for generosity to priests and religious).
They weren’t always so generous, however; their journey to more serious faith began with a business failure and massive debt. Listening to Christian radio inspired them to begin tithing—first their income and then, when they saw how that was blessed, their time and effort, too. Read their story and see a delightful interview with them about their most famous foster child at the link. (And here’s the current track and field schedule so we can cheer Lopez on when he runs the 1500 meters.)
