Sometimes it’s the small stuff that lets us see the hand of God
Hurrah for the Paper Plates

Do you ever get absurdly happy about little things?
Today after Mass our kids had a passel of friends over.
This was wonderful: something I love about our little neighborhood is that it’s walkable, and within blocks of our parish, so it’s natural for the neighbor kids to gather at one or another of their homes after Sunday Mass.
Today it was our place, which was fine except for the minor crisis posed by lunch.
We forgot to run the dishwasher last night, and hadn’t had time before church to do the breakfast dishes, so there wasn’t a clean plate in the house.
“Am I really going to have to wash all the dishes before I feed these kids?” I was sighing to myself.
(Job’s lament from today’s readings came to mind: “Has not man a hard service upon earth, and are not his days like the days of a hireling?”
But soft! What is that glint of red in the pantry?
Leftover paper plates—exactly enough, as it turned out, for the number of diners.
My day was made.

I got teary-eyed talking with Mormon Missionaries as I was filled with joyful thoughts of them inviting others to the beauty of a personal relationship with God. I asked them if they felt the Holy Spirit in prayer as they encourage us “possible” converts to do with the book of Mormon. We talked about prayer and I shared my experiences with my God in His movements toward and within my soul.
We exchanged stories, and they invited me to consider praying if book of Mormon was true. to which I responded if they were open to converting if they found the Catholic Church true, I would be open to converting if I found the LDS faith true. We left the convincing arguments aside and relished the beauty of prayer together. I told them with a bit of misty eyes, if I saw them riding around town I would hail them, but only if I wasn’t wiping my eyes. We finished talking with their promise to come visit after their mission work, to our local Catholic Church. And, to pray for me that I keep the misty eyes at home!! Here’s hoping I can.
