I Need a Cupcake

After an hour at my house, you will too

This morning I was supposed to get work done. This was why my supportive and encouraging husband offered to bring our daughter to the library for her volunteer hours. This was why he was designated bank-go-er.

So how to explain to him that the last hour has seen me accomplish NO WORK whatsoever? Well, at least not the kind of work I was supposed to be doing here on this computer.

Here’s what I did accomplish:

1. Locate source of foul odor, snatch unsuspecting toddler from living room, and use full body weight to pin down kicking child in order to change his diaper.

2. Change toddler shirt (Messy diapers are fine, but milk dribbles from breakfast that would dry in a few minutes outside in the sunshine are intolerable).

3. Break up a fight over the red matchbox car with white stripes while a mountainous collection of other matchbox cars with different kinds of colors and stripes sits in a nearby wagon, untouched.

4. Hang laundry on the line (gotta get it out there early or it won’t dry today).

5. Soothe boy when his big brother lets an inchworm go before he was ready to say goodbye.

6. Look for another inchworm—any inchworm!

7. Offer $5 reward for another inchworm—any inchworm!

8. Distract inchworm-less boy by awarding him the red matchbox car with white stripes that neither of those bickering kids deserves anyway.

9. Crunch breakfast cereal underfoot.

10. Make a loud proclamation (for the 172nd time so far this summer) that eating breakfast cereal straight from the box while walking around around the house is strictly forbidden.

11. Write a post about all the fabulous stuff I have been doing so far today.

The house is messier than when I began. I have accomplished exactly NONE of the work that I intended to. But now that I’ve made my list, I am feeling rather accomplished indeed.

What have you accomplished today?

—hung out mountains of laundry after camping out with toddlers
—noticed all the dirt tracked in from yard by me and said toddlers from hanging out laundry—but haven’t swept it because we still have more to hang out and then bring in
—will be pulling a cupcake out of the freezer for me to eat during naptime - thanks for the idea!!!!

I learned a new drill this morning called, “Appliance Guy”.  You use this when Appliance Guy calls to say that he is going to be coming by an hour earlier than planned, which is actually in 10 minutes.  Mom shouts “Appliance Guy” and magically, two older children help you:  change two overnight diapers, put two people on the potty, clean oatmeal from the top of the head to the bottoms of feet (don’t forget the inside of the ears!) of child with feeding issues, get two little people dressed, put away breakfast remnants, wipe down Counter of Oatmeal (don’t forget the floor!), dry the counter so it doesn’t look like you just did it, Mom gets dressed and runs fingers through hair (cursing to herself about being too lazy to wash off her makeup last night, complete with raccoon eyes) and everybody takes a deep breath before the doorbell rings.

Maybe I’ll do this every morning in place of aerobics.

Wow, what a morning, Danielle!

I’ve gotten a rough draft done (and by rough I mean, ahem, VERY rough) that I needed to finish, went to the doctor (everything’s fine), and drank approximately a gallon of coffee (not that I’m counting).  smile  Oh, and I hung out laundry too!  Yay for laundry lines!

Let’s see.  I got up, prayed, took a shower, got kids up, breakfast and chores organized -daughter #2 showed up with grandson and one hour early.  Got 5 year old ready for science camp.  Left 14 year old in charge of his brothers and nephew while I took the 5 year old to science camp.  Started thawing a frozen bottle while 2 mo old grandson screamed.  Took 3 other boys to tennis with the screaming grandson.  Got home, fed grandson.  Then talked for 30 minutes with a friend I haven’t seen for 15 years.  Picked up boys at tennis and daughter at science camp. Whew, now I need a cup of tea.

Oh thanks for asking.  I’m home all day today hurray and here’s what I’ve done…
1. 5 loads of luandry washed and either hung on line or put in dryer
2. 22 minutes on Wii Fit while I said my rosary
3.  15 mins cleaning out refridgerator
4.  15 mins vacuuming enourmous dustbunnies in and under computer desk
5. finding and copying papers and tests of 17yo ds to send to MODG for the end of the school year
6.  Directing 9yo, 11yo and 14yo to find all school papers, workbooks, etc from the year and make stacks for me to put away
7. 20 mins with a good book out in the sun
8. 20 mins in the basement playroom cleaning with kids, stomping around, grumbling, but NOT yelling about the mess as I shoved things into a big trash bag and they scurried to clean up a horrendous mess.  grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
9. paid little to no attention to the most darling 3yo dd :(
10.  set same darling children in front of the TV for a movie
11. Made plans to go out to dinner with dh and another couple-can you say MARGARITAS??

Why can’t I do the housekeeping thing AND the mothering thing both????

plans for afternoon…
1. take overdue shower
2. push 3yo on swing and maybe 6yo too
3. make frozen something for kids for dinner
4. place order for homeschool stuff for next year

We’ll see…..

Heck, I’m on vacation, but I did go to the grocery store this morning, checked the status of my son’s flight from Aruba to JFK at least 20 times and took a nap.  Oh, and Spent a lot of time on the computer.  Got a little sunburn yesterday so no beach time till 3 today.  I’m feeling guilty reading all your other posts!  Tee Hee!!

Thanks Danielle! I’m glad to know I’m not alone! I knew I was in trouble when I reached for the chocolate at 9:30 am. smile But, we made it to swimming lessons and back, the big kids made lunch, and I bathed little ones and got a teething infant to sleep, also crunching cereal underfoot as I paced. Even though little else is in place (housework), I am thankful that the kids are peaceful and exercised. Is it naptime yet?

Danielle, it’s uncanny, but my day was pretty much exactly the same as yours!  Only it was a lizard instead of an inchworm, and we don’t have a clothesline, so it was the dryer.  But yeah, rice krispys everywhere!

Took 6 kids to see Up, along with about 200 other people.
Did not get mad when oldest daughter forgot to get some candy so I had to give up mine.
Did not get mad when youngest daughter got too fussy so had to miss last 2/3 of movie.
Prayed a rosary while waiting outside enjoying the awesome rain that we desperately need.

Danielle, are you sure you don’t want to come here for a visit with the kids…I am telling you that you would feel way better about your day!!! +JMJ+

This morning I awoke at 4:00 to get my husband ( WHO HAS BEEN ON VACATION FOR TWO WEEKS)up for work and my nineteen year old daughter up for school. I cooked each an omelet, packed my husband’s lunch and made him his customary large espresso to go.Once they were gone I cleaned up the living room, did my wii workout and prepared for the day.Once my boys got up a few hours later, I had to take the youngest to the store to buy a white dress shirt for our coming cruises dress up night. I had to go to two different banks, take the dogs to the vet for heartworm medication, stop by the store , drop off some donations to Good Will, and come back home to cook dinner once everyone was home. After dinner I took my boys to their karate class, hoping to use the pool but when I couldn’t find a parking space I came home, answered E mails and started reading Faith and families posts. In five minutes I have to go get my boys and stopping for a cup cake sounds great but I’m on a diet so I will have to settle for a cheese cube instead. Thanks for the venting break !
