I Pledge…

Seen the video various celebrities put out pledging to be better people now that President Obama is in office?
I freely confess it strains my capacity to think charitably of others. They pledge things like smiling, being kind to people, being a good mom.
Honestly. Can you imagine letting your effort to be a decent person depend upon who’s in office? Every four years I stop trying to be good? I think perhaps this effort wasn’t too well thought out.
The other possibility is the stars aren’t thinking about themselves at all, but using their fame to try to coax us unwashed, unfab slackers to put some pepper in it. In either case the video strikes me as insufferably condescending.
Some of the pledges strike me as dubious for another reason, like the starlet who commits to drinking tap water. (Those of us who have never had it in budget to do otherwise might be less than impressed.) And some are a little disturbing, as when Demi Moore promises to be the new president’s servant. I could wish Ms. Moore would pledge to read the Constitution and maybe the Federalist Papers and understand the President serves us, not vice versa. Want a king to be subject to, look elsewhere. This is self-government.
Anyway, it strikes me we could come up with some pledges that actually would better the world.
Like committing to an hour of eucharistic adoration each week. (Hence the illustration.)
What would you suggest? And despite my poor example, let’s try to keep the anti-celebrity snark to a minimum. Love our enemies, do good to those who persecute us: you know the drill.
