I personally love the Bravado brand nursing tanks. They have great support, and really stand up to multiple wearings/washings. My husband got me a beautiful nursing bra from Hot Milk for our anniversary. I love it, and it is very supportive as well.
In Search of Support

A friend was recently asking me for advice on finding a good nursing bra and I realized I have the perfect place to ask: all the fine breast-feeding gurus of the Faith and Family readership.
So please answer: where do you find a good nursing bra that offers support and (here is the caveat) one that is not underwire?
Thank you for your suggestions and recommendations.

I, too, have used Bravado bras in the past and found them to be quite comfortable and stand up to washing/wearing. However, to be totally honest - my best recommendation is to get to a quality bra/lingerie shop. A professional fitting will go miles for finding the best bra for her (or anyone for that matter). My best bras have been all different brands but all professionally fitted and that includes bras with and without underwires.
I know this sounds too simple, but it’s true! My favorite nursing bra was from JCPenney’s and it’s a “Duo Maternity” brand wireless nursing bra. It was sooo comfortable. I loved it especially for sleeping at night. They’re super cheap so you can get a few which makes them even more lovely. Nothing fancy, but I loved it!
It’s been almost 5 years since my youngest was born, but I LIVED in Glamourmom nursing tanks when he was an infant. They were perfect alone when I was just hanging around the house, and they were great for layering when I was going out and about.
This one really depends on how much, um, support your friend needs. I’m a big fan of nursing tanks for around the house (and Target carries them if you don’t want to spend the money on Glamourmom or Bravado) but they do not cut it for me when I’m out and about. For the most part, I’ve been happiest with my underwire nursing bras, but for larger-chested women who still want to avoid wire, I highly recommend the Bravado Bliss. It’s not perfect, but it’s very supportive and well-made and gives a good silhouette without underwire.
No matter what your friend wants, unless there’s a high-quality store near her that carries a large range of nursing bras, I am a big fan of the website http://birthandbaby.com. They have by far the largest selection of nursing bras I’ve seen online, with tons of brands, styles, and sizes. Plus, the owner of the site tries each bra and makes notes about its fit. Plus, and this is my favorite part, the shipping is very cheap and they expect and recommend that you will order a bunch of different bras, try them, then return the ones that don’t work for you. (You have to pay return shipping yourself, but in my experience it costs very little to mail bras since they’re so light.) I have no association with this site, just found it by accident, but I’ve been super happy with their service and will keep ordering bras from them as long as I’m nursing. http://birthandbaby.com
Hope this helps!
Thank you, Arwen! I’m definitely going to spend some time on this site. I need some new nursing bras and the more available to try, the better!
I’m 5 mos. pregnant with our first baby, so I’m finding this conversation really helpful! Thanks! As Arwen says, though, a lot seems to depend on how much “support” one needs.
Ladies, if you’re comfortable sharing it, would you mind giving a sense when you post of where you fall in the size spectrum so that readers can make good use of your recommendation? Hope I’m not being too indelicate; it would just help a girl who used to feel huge at her regular 32F and now is already sporting a 34G.
Lissy - On the “spectrum” I’m right there with you. My non-pregnant size is 32F and during pregnancy I bloom up to as large as a 34I. My post is above - I highly recommend finding a good bra/lingerie shop and getting a professional fitting. My guess is that at a 32F you probably have already done so at some point in time! I have been able to use some of the Bravado bras as mentioned above. I would avoid “sports bra” like nursing bras and nursing tanks are useless for me unless I have a nursing bra underneath it - which I think defeats the purpose. Also, for me it’s best to wait about 3-4 weeks after baby is born to buy my nursing bras for the long haul (I buy nicer, little more expensive ones) because by then my supply seems evened out. During pregnancy as my size is changing periodically I buy the cheaper ones to just “get me through”
I’m late to this discussion, but I have the same problem, Lissy. My usual size is 34G and when nursing, I run into the J cup realm. I find that the only bras that do the trick are ones made in Europe which is funny as my buxom nature comes straight from my Italian-born mother.
I am partial to Anita (both with and without underwire). I’ve been wearing my Anita bras for 2 years now and they are still wonderful. Interestingly, my favourite non-nursing bras are also a line owned by Anita (Rosa Faia).
Congratulations and good luck! (I want to add that my security code is ‘big56’
)
I really wanted to love the Bravado bras and tanks b/c I’d read such rave reviews about them, but I hated them! The simple (and much cheaper) Target brand became my fav, especially as I continued to increase in size during the first few months of nursing and had to keep going back to the store. I really liked their sleep (or sport? can’t remember) nursing bra that wasn’t lacy at all - just soft, soft, and really comfortable. I also had two expensive Elle Macpherson bras that were nice (and that I got fitted at a store towards the end of my pregnancy), but honestly the Target brand fit & held up just as well, at 1/5 of the price! So my experience kind of contradicts others. Needless to say, I’m going all Target this time as well.
I am glad to see someone else didn’t like the Bravado bras. I tried one, and didn’t care for it. I much prefer the ones I buy at Target (although I prefer an underwire). I am average size (38C-D) and have been wearing nursing bras for almost 8 years with 5 kids.
I’m usually a 34—36 D, and my favorite has been the Target underwire, too. They’re a little boring but still pretty (lace- they come in black, white, and tan) and offer great support. I find myself wearing them as my regular bra even when I’m not nursing. I tried a bunch of bras from Motherhood Maternity and Mimi, and hated them all
Meant to add- nursing tanks don’t have nearly enough support for me, so when I know I’ll be going out and doing a lot of nursing in public, I usually wear a regular but fairly low-cut tank over my bra and under my shirt. That way, I can lift up my shirt from the bottom, scoop my boob out from the top of my tank, and still have my belly covered.
If you need really great support, go with the Goddess brand Comfort Zone nursing bra. Once you try it on, you will see how un-supportive the Bravado and others really are. You can even exercise in it! The above mentioned Breakout Bras carries them, and many other good nursing bras.
I like wireless too but had a hard time finding something that felt supportive enough. So for daily wear I wear nursing sports bras. I find them very comfortable and supportive. I got mine at motherhood maternity. I do have 3 regular bras too for church and to wear with nicer shirts, just don’t like them as well.
As a larger chested woman here is what I’ve finally found that works best:
Bravado tanks are alright but don’t always give me the shape and support I need. I love the bravado bliss bras! If i plan to nurse in public that day or if it is cold outside I also wear an Undercover Mama tank with it. That way my back and belly stay covered but I also have the support I need. Undercover Mama was a great find - they are Basically strapless tanks that clip to any bra. I will say that with the bravado bliss the material is pretty thick where I have to clip the tank on so its a little difficult but works great!

This is the one I used during the day. It keeps my shape, unlike sports bras, and is easy to use. Very comfy. Very much like my regular bras. Not good for nights, though, because you’ll fall out of them after awhile. For nights I went to Target and got a nursing tank. LOVED that tank!!
I must say that I am glad to see no one has voted for Leading Lady. I have Been disappointed by that brand. medela offers some nice bras in the less expensive category, and i also highly recommend birthandbaby.com. when my bras size reduces at about 6 months PP,, I sometimes go back to using non-nursing bras that now fit again, but alter them with hook and eyes or parts from old nursing bras, so they become nursing bras. It’s not that hard—but I wouldn’t do it to a really nice bra!
I loved my Bravado nursing bras, they were more of a sports bra style. I also had a couple of “nonwire - underwire” bras by Medela (The breast pump company). I also bought a “sleep bra” which for me was completly useless, I couldn’t keep a nursing pad in there and woke up soaked a couple of times. I ended up sleeping in one of the Bravado sports bra. I’m a 36 D (DD while nursing). I was fortunate to find a store that catered exclusively to nursing moms. It was owned and run by two lactation consultants who were very knowledgable in the products they carried and were able to “fit” me. The other great thing was that when I went in there after my baby was born I’d get great lactation advice. I would advise finding somewhere you can be fitted. Also once towards the end of your pregnancy and then again after your baby arrives.
I happened to find a Bravado bra on clearance at Target (it was an on-line purchase that had been returned), so I scooped it up! I will be using it after this baby (#3) and just by looking at it, it looks comfy and supportive.
Other than that, I’ve sworn by Target’s nursing tanks! I’m hoping I’ve found something with Bravado, and am glad to see so many positive comments about them on here! I also don’t mind Target’s nursing bras; I just haven’t bought more since I changed sizes last time. ![]()
I fall into the 36D category when I’m not pregnant, and maybe a 38 when nursing.
I used to love Motherwear (http://www.motherwear.com). They had supportive, comfortable bras for day and overnight wear as well as pretty nursing clothes.
I love the Bravado Silk Seamless, it’s sooooo comfortable, and while it’s not underwire it gives good supprt and is invisible under shirts.
For something a little prettier I really like Condessa Bras, again I try to avoid the underwire (bad for plugged ducts, etc.) but they are really nice.
Just in case a smaller-chested woman is reading this thread, looking for someone’s experience/reviews (I myself went from “nearly A” to B with nursing - woohoo!)...
I love Target’s nursing tanks and “sleep” bras (although I have 3 and wear them all day long) for comfort and ease of use. When I needed more shape for dressing up and going out, I found Motherhood Maternity’s Wireless Full Coverage Nursing Bra (it has molded foam cups that are still easy to bend down for nursing) to be my favorite.
I am not able to recommend one particular brand over others, but I will say that being able to hook/unhook the bra (in order to nurse on either side) using only one hand is key for me. A couple of my bras require two hands to unhook/rehook and this is often difficult (or impossible) to do while holding a baby. I also find that the nursing bras that are more like sports bras, while super comfortable, often have necklines and straps that stick out from under (reasonably modest) shirts or ride up toward my neck. I did not realize this when I bought them, and so was disappointed.
Nursing bras are not the same as conventional bras; nursing bras can be adjusted more to allow for changes in breast size and shape throughout the day, they provide more support, they allow for the discrete insertion of breast pads, the cup linings are designed to avoid irritating already sore nipples, and most of all, they make breastfeeding a whole lot easier
