In Thanksgiving

1. When you have a sister and brother-in-law who agree to pile their bigger-than-yours family into their giant van and make the trek up to Nowheresville, NH for an extended stay, you are blessed indeed.
2. When that same sister stays up late to chat with you and eat too much dessert with you and she knows exactly where you keep the ibuprofen and laughingly reaches for it at the same time you do, you are blessed even more.
3. You can never have too many pies.
4. Or paper plates.
5. When you and your husband find yourselves on the verge of your traditional “It’s a holiday and company is coming and I am tired and stressed” fight and you manage to recognize it for what it is, duly acknowledge its hideousness, and then avoid it altogether, you just might have grown up a little bit.
6. When you manage to put Thanksgiving dinner for 22 on the table(s) without burning anything or freaking out along the way, you just might have grown up a little bit more.
7. When your kids argue over who “gets to” peel the potatoes, just buy another peeler already. Or seven.
8. When you pile a mess of boys in one room with sleeping bags and a mess of girls in another room with sleeping bags, the boy room will fall silent and sleepy hours before the girl room does.
9. When you go into the chatty girl room at about 1:30 am to suggest that they go to sleep now, several pairs of eyes will squint at you in the dark—trying to figure out which “mom” you are.
10. When you have company that makes your own family feel small, quiet, and boring upon their departure, you have truly enjoyed a blessed holiday.
