It's Not About the Scale
But seeing results helps provide motivation...

Last week, I shared with all of you that I had taken myself back to Weight Watchers as my birthday present to myself. Those of you who have done WW in the past know that sick feeling that comes from falling “off program” and then having to go back at some point in the future and climb back on that scale. Once the initial weigh-in is behind you, it becomes easier to focus on the journey ahead.
On Monday morning, I woke up bright and early to head to my meeting, after having been back on Weight Watchers for a full seven days. It’s amazing how your mindset can change in a week if you’re in the right “place” inside your head. For the two months prior to my birthday, I’d been feeling frustrated beyond measure with my efforts to get this part of my life back under control. I’d spent that time losing and regaining the same two pounds, teetering on the edge of giving in and letting myself go for good. “Maybe I’m too old for those… maybe it’s the prescription medication I’m taking… maybe I should just give up,” became my daily mantra.
But the thing is, I truly believe we are never too old to care for ourselves physically, spiritually and emotionally. While I don’t want to be obsessed with a dress size or fitting into skinny jeans (not gonna happen!), I do want to live a good, long life with my boys and my husband. Additionally, taking control over my physical health tends to have tremendous overflow into how I feel spiritually and emotionally. But the bottom line key to it all is prayer - making time every day to commune with the God who loves me so greatly (regardless of my size!) that He will carry my burdens for me if I simply pause long enough to speak with Him. Asking our Blessed Mother to walk with me has helped too, since she is such a wonderful advocate for us moms!
At my meeting on Monday, a member stood at the front of the room happily announcing her one year anniversary on the program. During that year, she has lost 87 pounds! While she still has a journey ahead of her, she spoke of the things that had kept her motivated. “I will not give up on my health,” she shared, “I will not give up on ME!” This brave woman’s commitment to a “one day at a time” philosophy is so relevant to many areas of our lives where we may struggle.
Just for today, give yourself permission to reach out to God for the help you need with whatever may be weighing down upon you - that may be health issues, your marital relationship, a sense of frustration in your vocation, or even the clutter that fills your home or calendar.
Just for today, focus on one baby step that will help you not give up on yourself. Name your “issue”, look it in the eye, and take one baby step today to overcome it. Skip dessert, reach across the table and hold your husband’s hand at dinner, or fill a shopping bag full of things to be donated. You don’t have to look beyond this one day to all of the struggles that lie in your path ahead—that may cause you to give up before you’ve ever even gotten started.
The progress I saw towards my own goals this week has left me motivated and encouraged. What can you do today to move one “baby step” ahead along the path to greater joy? God is waiting to hold your hand along that path if you let Him!
