Jim Caviezel: Our Lives are Miracles

In doing some reading last night, I came across this Catholic Digest interview with Catholic actor Jim Caviezel. In the course of the discussion on his movies (including the recently released The Stoning of Soraya M), Mr. Caviezel discusses his love relationship with his adoptive children from China, Bo and LeLe.
“I don’t even know who I was before (laughs). Dennis Quaid told me a long time ago when he had his son Jack, ‘You’ll have emotions in you that you didn’t even know existed before you had a child.’ I now know what that feels like. Even though they’re adopted, it’s as strong as any instinct. That’s what blew me away. I always thought if I adopted that I wouldn’t have the same feeling [as I would] if they were genetically my own children. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
I remember being surprised at how deeply impacted by husband Greg was by fatherhood - how tightly he immediately bonded with little Eric the moment he was born into our family. I’ve heard this same reaction from friends with adopted children - that they anticipate that moment of parenthood so greatly in advance of a baby or child’s arrival that the intensity of love hits the moment they cast eyes upon their new family member.
It’s special to hear any man speak so lovingly of his role as father, but uniquely wonderful when the man in question is so famous and talented. I hope you’ll take a few moments to read the interview and to join me in saying a prayer or two this morning for adoptive families around the world waiting to be united with one another. And while we’re on the topic of adoption, please enjoy a visit to our good friend Heidi Hess Saxton’s Extraordinary Moms Network for some guidance and encouragement.
