Just Say It

Last week, our youngest daughter, Leah, celebrated her seventh birthday. She has always been a child that greets each morning with grins and hugs. But it is her clever banter that keeps us going on the dreariest of days.
She has been caught naming aloud all of the raisins in her bagel — and recently told me something I said was “just plain preposterous.”
Her method of requesting breakfast one morning? “My tummy is empty, and I won’t be able to do school with all this hungriness.”
Her request for a bedtime story? “Leah, what book would you like?” “Oh, you know, something with magic and romance.”
My favorite gem of late was when I asked her to stop making raspberries with her mouth because she was spitting. “But Mommy, I’m beat boxing.”
I know someday it will change. This phase, like all phases, will end. Oh, surely she’ll say wise and endearing things — but it will be different.
Her wisdom will be more mature. Her words will be more sensible.
But for now, I’ll relish these verbal volleys for what they are: glimpses into the clever mind and pure heart of a 7-year-old kid who just thinks it and says it. We have to be so judicious with our words as we grow older. How refreshing to remember what it was like back in the day.
