Keep It On!

Blaise toddled past me, as he often does, and I noticed him out of the corner of my eye.
It took a few seconds… and then my head whipped around. Because the kid was not wearing a diaper.
We are not particularly uptight about cleanliness in our household, but we have to draw the line somewhere, and in the past we have always drawn it in a place that results in our non-potty-trained children wearing diapers in the house. I have lots of respect for people who give their kids diaper-free time, but we have wall-to-wall carpet, and that’s just not how we roll.
So who had removed the baby’s diaper?
I know you experienced parents are already nodding your heads. Yes, of course. He did it himself.
We use cloth diapers with velcro fasteners, and I’ve got plans to convert the velcro to snaps as soon as the necessarily tools I ordered arrive. I’ve heard that many babies have trouble unfastening the snaps, so I’m hoping that will solve the problem long-term.
In the meantime, our current strategy for keeping the diapers on the baby is to make sure he’s wearing shorts at all times. Not that he can’t remove his shorts, but they seem to help as a deterrent. I hope this will hold us until the snaps arrive for the diapers.
But what about families who use disposable diapers? We used them with Camilla, but luckily she never removed her own diapers, so we didn’t have to deal with that problem. You can’t put snaps on a disposable diaper. I’ve heard of people using duct tape on the diapers, and I’ve also heard of buying one snapped cloth-diaper cover and putting it over every disposable so that the baby can’t get at his diaper.
I’m sure some of you have dealt with this problem. Did you solve it? Want to share what worked for you?
