Is it OK to wash swimsuits (used in a chlorinated pool) with the rest of the laundry? I usually try to wash just the swimsuits together, but I only have two to wash and I don’t want to do a load with just those.
I have washed suits with other clothes in cold water cycle with no problems. You can use the gentle cycle if you are concerned. I don’t put the suits in the dryer. My daughter is on swim team, so her suits get washed with the clothes quite a bit, and have held up fine all season.
I either wash suits and beach towels together or wash suits with the rest of the clothes if we don’t have towels to wash. I dry the boys’ and my husband’s on low and line dry mine and my daughter’s. Men’s trunks seem to hold up just fine in the dryer.
We have a pool and four kids, so we go through a bunch of suits. I don’t really wash them unless they are dirty, I have a bucket near the hose by the back door that I fill wit clean water after each swim session, where I also have a clothesline under the deck, in the shade. the kids have terrycloth robes hanging right inside the door and take their suits off before going in, put them in a bucket of clear water, and I rinse and wring them out before line drying. they keep their color, hold up great and with all the chlorine, I don’t really feel the suits are dirty enough to have to go through a wash cycle with detergent. A quick rinse in a sink would work too.
Danielle, you had me giggling my head off. When my 5 kids were younger I used to make them do the same thing. The really little ones would streak through the house naked LOL. I spent a lot of time chasing them down in the summer. Those were the days…........: )
This overlaps the homemaking and educating categories, but who has a good system for keeping homeschool papers in order? I’ll have six homeschooled or partially homeschooled kids this year. I have filing cabinets and folders but maybe what I need most is a system to see that the papers actually get there as part of the daily routine. I’m also curious about software for homeschool recordkeeping.
For homeschool recordkeeping software, please take a look at Scholaric (http://scholaric.com). I created it for my wife’s homeschooling needs, and it is becoming quite popular. We wanted something that was easy to use for homeschoolers who used paper, spreadsheet, or calendar-based planning.
Take a look and tell me what you think!

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight (hurrah!) and am excavating the spare room closet for stuff that will now fit me. A few pairs of jeans have developed a really musty/damp-ish smell that repeated washing does not seem to be shifting. I line dry clothes and had hoped that a good stretch outside in the sun might help, but they still smell funny. Any suggestions gratefully received!
Did you try putting white vinegar in the last rinse? You may even want to soak them for a while in the vinegar solution. I would think no more than an hour. I put in a whole cup for a full load. That usually helps. If it doesn’t help, I don’t know any other remedies for this. Good Luck!

Hi everyone! How is everyone keeping cool ? 108 yesterday in NYC. I’m in the AC.
@ Joan,
Whoo wee, it is hot here too in the midwest. It says it is 90 degrees out, but feels like 100 degrees.
I keep all the blinds and curtains closed. I also try to use less electricity around the house, in hopes that we don’t have a shortage with the old air cond. working over time. What does everyone keep their air at? 75? 80? My back room is facing west and it gets hotter than 85 in there and I have the computer back there. I am afraid the electronics are going to get over heated just from being in the room.
We bought lots of popsicles, clear gatorade, and set up the sprinkler under shade trees. We also visit the local library since we can’t go outside for a long time.
I dread washing the dishes and doing laundry because I get too hot. So, the house is looking messing, but we’re staying cool. I am actually bonding more with the kids because we are forced inside. Nothing like a glass of lemonade and reading library books. Well and early nap times are nice too
That sounds awful Joan! We were up to 99 on Thursday, with an overnight low of 86, and I was miserable. Today is “only” going to reach 91! We don’t have central air, so I’ve been getting cabin fever with the house all closed up and listening to the roar of the window AC units. I am definitely not a fan of this weather.
The Ipps…might I suggest paper plates and plastic utensils/cups? Might solve the washing the dishes problem for the meantime!
AnnR…that’s a great idea to use paper plates etc. I was just at the grocery store too, oh well. I meant to say messy on my first post and not messing. Oh well, gotta love typing fast and then not checking too well.
