Lights Out

For the second Christmas in a row, we had a light incident on our tree.
Last year, the week before Christmas, the middle section of my Christmas tree went completely dark. For several days I had an interior struggle about if and how I should handle this problem (in our home, Christmas tree lights fall under my jurisdiction). I stared at the tree, then tried to will the lights back on, and when that didn’t work I tried to wiggle random bulbs (to no avail). I finally realized the solution was to slap another strand on top of the broken one and voila! Crisis averted.
This year the lights didn’t go out until a few days after Christmas. This would normally be a non-issue, except we were hosting a big family party the day after New Year’s and I wanted all the Christmas decor to be up and working. I finally convinced Paul to put another strand over the broken one (like last year) and he was willing to help out. That worked great—for about two hours. Then, sadly, the top half of the replacement strand quit working and we were back to square one (minue 50 lights).
It all worked out fine, of course. The party went on as planned and I bet no one would have noticed the lights if I had not been compelled to point them out to every.single.person. who came through the door.
Lesson learned: you can try all you want, but sometimes these lights have a mind of their own. When that happens, learn to laugh. And buy backups for next year.
