Little Girl Love

This week I had an awesome privilege: the chance to be present at the birth of my very first niece.
Only one of my siblings is married, and Bryan’s an only child, so my sister’s kids are (so far) my sole chance at aunt-hood. She has two boys already and I’d have loved another one just as much, but I am thrilled that Branwen had a girl instead.
(I’m already plotting matching Christmas dresses for our daughters.)
My sister gave birth to Lauren Elizabeth in the early afternoon on Wednesday, and besides that moment, the best part of my day was hearing Camilla tell her daddy about it on the phone. “Aunt Branwen’s baby came out of her belly! And it’s a girl! I have a girl cousin now!”
Having three sisters myself, I’ve always wanted my daughter to have at least one sister as well, but it’s not something I can control. At this rate, any possible sister she has will be five or more years younger than she is, nothing like the side-by-side childhoods my sisters and I experienced growing up. I trust God’s plan and I know that trying to make her childhood just like mine is silly, but still… I’m glad Camilla has a girl cousin now. I hope they’ll be friends always.
Right now, one of them is busy adjusting to life outside the womb… and the other is totally smitten. Isn’t that picture sweet?
