Looking Back

Taking a peek at 2009 and wondering what lies ahead

I love this week of December - it’s always a retrospective time for me.  This year has been a treat since we’re “staycationing” at home and luxuriating in hours of rest and relaxation.

One of the things I did this week was take a peek back at my calendar for the past year.  Wow,  no wonder I feel the need for a break!  We had so many highlights during 2009 - so many reasons to count our blessings!  I wanted to share just a few, and invite you to list a few of your families celebrations and special moments for the year we just lived through.

For our family, the year began with my radiation treatments for non-invasive breast cancer.  In reality, since I was blessed not to have to live through chemotherapy, this felt a bit like a seven week retreat.  I lightened my work load, took extra time for rest, and began each day with morning mass.  I had a tribe of people praying for me, and their prayers felt so tangible that I was literally uplifted during this time.  Thanks be to God for good health a year later!

This year, our boys had some wonderful moments too, including Eric’s Confirmation and Adam’s junior high graduation.  This New Year’s finds me prouder than ever of the young men who live in my home - not only for their accomplishments, but especially for the fantastic people they are on the inside!  Their character and generosity towards one another and the world around them is inspiring to me.

My husband, the rock of our home, continued a very successful practice as an ER doctor and published a textbook this year.  Greg heals so many people every week, and does so with such great compassion.  People who have been helped by him are always sharing with me what a great doctor he is.  With every year of learning and experience, he continues to grow in his ability to reach out and help others.  Also this year, Greg and Adam became a part of our Life Teen band at church, which has my convert husband playing at two masses every Sunday.  His quiet faith is a great role model for me.

I will always remember 2009 as the year I wrote a book!  A lifelong dream is about to be accomplished with the publication of The Handbook for Catholic Moms in February.  Regardless of what happens with the book, I will remember the experience of writing it, collaborating with all of you and over thirty contributors I greatly admire, as my personal highlight of 2009.

Along the way, we had moments of pain, a few friends lost, struggles and some challenges.  But God is good and He blessed our family so abundantly over the past twelve months.  How about you?  What were some of the moments you will not forget from the year you just celebrated?
