Mad About Millinery

What's On your Head This Derby Weekend?

Hello ladies!

The Kentucky Derby is here! Will any of you lovely Kentucky girls be attending (or otherwise celebrating) this weekend? I must admit, being a Southern transplant, I don’t know much about the Derby. The first thing that always comes to mind when I hear it mentioned is ... well, Mint Juleps! Now that’s a tradition I can get behind! wink

The second thing that comes to mind is hats! Big, beautiful hats! Here’s a little confession for you: lover of fashion though I may be, I don’t get hats. It’s not that I don’t see the point of them—I smile every Easter when I spot the few confident women who still embrace flamboyant Easter bonnets—I just don’t yet grasp how to elegantly incorporate them into my wardrobe.

If the following hat shoppes have anything to do with it, though, I’ll figure it out soon. Their hats are just too tempting!

This vintage hat parlour had me at hello! Now all my Jackie O. dreams can come true!

This online hat boutique offers a full eight pages of Kentucky Derby hats! Too fun! Thank you, Lady Diane!

I love the variety that popped up when I searched for “women’s summer hats” on Etsy. There’s truly something for everyone!

If you’re a wearer of hats, do you have a favorite provider of said hats? Do share! I think I may just have been bitten by the millinery bug!

Have a lovely Derby weekend, girls!

I have lived in KY most of my life with the exception of the first 2 years.  I have yet to make it to the Derby, though it is on my “bucket list”.  We have always joined in on some kind of Derby festivities.  Weather permitting we are going to an outside Derby this year too.  I have never sported a Derby hat, I’m just not that brave.  That could possibly come from my mom making me and my younger sister wear matching hats on Easter long after all the other children had stopped.  And a big yes to a mint julep.

I went to the 1994 KY Derby, infield of course. :D no hats down there with great unwashed unless you count cowboy hats and baseball caps. Sea Hero won that year.
Dh and I lived in Lousiville, KY the first two years of our marriage and my first two children were born there. I missed the 1993 Derby (dh went) because I was due with our first baby May 19. In hindisight I should have gone since she didn’t arrive until June :D
We loved KY and it will always hold a very special place in my heart. I try and watch the Derby every year and I get teary at ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ every single time. Sadly, I’ve missed it the last couple years, we are so busy and so many years removed from that time in our life.
Someday I’d love to go back for Derby Festival and the Derby. Someday….

I would love to be brave enough to wear hats. If anyone has any advice for how to stage a fashion comeback for wearing hats—or just advice for how the staid among us can get away with it—pass it on!

amen nicole! i love hats and would wear them WAY more, but noone else really does, so i feel like i’d be the odd man out.  everyone was laughing at the royal wedding hats, but for the most part, i LOVED them! smile

Our women’s club at church is having their annual luncheon and we are having a “Derby” theme.  We are all encouraged to wear a hat but I have to admit I don’t have one yet.  I had all these plans… Oh well, maybe a late night run to Stuffmart will turn up something I can make pretty.  smile

I look good in a cloche which I wear in the winter. I love the hats that Kate (used to be Middleton) wears.

I missed this post until now——as a Louisville gal, I LOVE Derby!! The only time ever been was when my now husband and I were dating. I decided I wanted to marry him that day!

During the half marathon, we run through Churchill Downs. I got all teary eyed there, thinking of all the history!
