Meet My Laundry Buddy

It’s 11 am. Ask me how my laundry’s looking. Go ahead, ask me.
Okay, I’ll tell you how my laundry’s looking ... it’s all caught up! It’s washed, dried, folded, and put away. The clothes are clean, the sheets are clean, the towels are clean, and the bathing suits are clean.
But I can’t take credit for any of it. It’s my new laundry buddy, 9-year-old Stephen, who keeps me on track. I’m barely out of bed each morning when he starts asking me to put a load in.
It hasn’t always been like this. The attraction, you see, are my new machines. Last week, some very nice young men came and hauled away my 14-year-old washer and dryer and left behind these beauties in their place. (Thank you to my husband for making laundry a financial priority this month!)
One look at all those lights and buttons and Stephen was sold. Doing the laundry now is like piloting a spaceship, and he was eager to learn.
So each day I supervise as he sorts the clothes, loads the machines, measures the detergent, and then ... here’s the best part ... presses the buttons.
He’s not so enamored with the idea of folding and putting away, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s actually very helpful for me to have his pressing reminders that it’s time to start another load. He keeps me on track and I never find myself folding laundry at 9:00 pm these days.
I know the thrill will eventually wear off and I’ll lose my buddy, but for now I am basking in the simple joy of boyish company in my homemaking.
