Meeting "In Real Life"

When online friends meet up!

This week, I am in the midwest for some speaking and book related events and meetings.  Today, I had the opportunity to meet up with two of my online friends in “real life” encounters.  The first meeting was with one of my favorite authors, Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda.  Maria is a prolific author of such great books as Edith Stein: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and The Journey: A Guide For The Modern Pilgrim, as well as important books on our Blessed Mother.  Online, she has also been a tremendous support to many Catholic authors on a Catholic Writers list she moderates.  Honestly,  I have considered Maria to be a role model and a mentor for several years, so I was thrilled to jump at the chance to meet her in person.  As I expected, we fell into chatting the way old friends would after having known one another for years.  What a wonderful treat to spend some time in her physical company!

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to visit and talk books and mom stuff with Nancy Myers Piccione of The Catholic Post.  A homeschooling mom of three, Nancy is at work on developing a wonderful new Catholic book section for The Post and its accompanying website.  It was such a treat to meet her and learn more about her life and family.

Having the chance to share a cup of coffee “in real life” with online friends is a joy that never gets old!  It is also a reminder that the Body of Christ that is alive and well on sites like Faith & Family Live continues to create and nurture real relationships that can blossom into lifelong friendships.  As I visit Chicago and South Bend this week, I will have the chance to meet “old friends” for the first time, and make a few new friends along the way too!

Thanks to Maria and Nancy for their friendship!  Also, please pray for the Moms at St. Clement Parish in Chicago who will join me for a talk later tonight - we appreciate your prayerful support for their fellowship and the conversation we will share about life as Catholic Moms!

When was the last time you met someone “in real life” that you knew from an online forum like this?  How did meeting in person add a new dimension to that relationship for you?
