Misty Headache

Humidifier season hits our household again

During the past week overnight temperatures have dropped here in Michigan, which means we’re running our heat again.

I love autumn, but I dread the coming of cold weather, because we do not have the humidifier thing figured out.

We know we need humidifiers in our house.  I am horribly prone to dry skin, and none of us sleeps well in the dry-throated fuzzy-mouthed state induced by heating the house at night.

We just don’t happen to have been able to find a humidifying system that works for us.  When we replaced our furnace two years ago we were thrilled because it had a built-in humidifier, but while that raised the humidity in the house slightly, it wasn’t enough.

Over the past two winters we’ve bought about seven different room humidifiers.  All of them have had issues.  One of them kept molding inside the tank, some other models didn’t put out enough mist to keep the bedroom humid enough for us, and all of them had filters that needed replacing with alarming frequency.  Oh, and one of them - while we were taking it back to our hometown to use while visiting our parents - actually fell out of the back of the car onto the pavement in a parking lot and cracked open.

As we were approaching spring last year, Bryan went out to buy yet another replacement filter for the humidifier we were using at the time, and came back with yet another humidifier.  This one was more expensive than most, but claimed to have a permanent filter.  “We will never buy another humidifier filter again!” my triumphant husband proclaimed.

Well, what do you know?  The “permanent” filter, within a matter of weeks, developed some pretty severe mineral build-up from our hard water.  Then we carelessly left the humidifier sitting for a while, and it mildewed beyond repair.  The “permanent” filter was toast.

We still use the fan part of the humidifier, though.  It’s the best - albeit the most expensive - white noise machine we’ve ever owned.

I’m thinking we have Bad Humidifier Luck, is what.

There are so many worse areas of your life in which to have bad fortune - love, health, finances - that I’m pretty much resigned to our fate on the humidifier front.  I think my husband is too, considering the tongue-in-cheek comment he made last week about it being time for our yearly “humidifier budget” again.  Maybe someday we will conquer this thing.  But even if we don’t… eh, we’re doing okay.

Does your household have a logistical challenge you can’t seem to beat?  Bad luck in a certain area?  Please share!  I’d love to think we’re not the only ones.
