My First Homeschool Conference

Planning for fun in Kansas City!

I’m so excited that this weekend, I will have the opportunity to attend and speak at my very first homeschooling conference. Although I’ve spoken in countless venues around the country in the past few years, the Kansas City Conference for Catholic Homeschoolers will be my very first opportunity to attend a conference specifically geared to homeschooling families.

The agenda for the conference looks so exciting! But along with listening to my fellow speakers, I’m honestly most excited about simply interacting with the many moms and dads who have committed themselves to providing such a wonderful educational opportunity for their children. Of course, on a daily basis I have that chance with many of you here who homeschool. But being able to meet these families in person will be a real treat!

For those of you who have attended homeschooling conferences in the past, I would love your tips and suggestions for making the most of this opportunity. What recommendations can you offer about things I should be sure to see and experience? How do homeschooling conferences differ from other Catholic conferences? What is your favorite homeschooling conference to attend? Also, if you’re planning to be in Kansas City for this event, please let me know so I can look out for you!

We are so excited to have you Lisa! I’d love to eat dinner with you Friday.

Dianna, you are so kind! Please look for me at dinner (I’ll be the lonely looking mom who doesn’t know anyone!) - not sure how much I will eat, but I’d love some great company and will look forward to meeting you!

I’ve been attending the IHM Catholic Homeschool Conference in the D.C. area for several years & it is wonderful!  http://www.ihmconference.org/national/
My advice to those who are new to homeschoolng & new to these conferences is not to get overwhelmed at the huge amount of great resources available at the vendor fairs (though these are great places to do some birthday & Christmas shopping for your family!).  I like that the IHM Conference has a spiritual emphasis on living & growing as a Catholic, as well as the regular talks on education & a Q & A session for those new to home education.  I also appreciate that the Conference offers talks geared specifically toward teens.  Praying the Rosary, Scapular enrollment, & opportunities for Confession are also offered during the Conference.  I have been blessed to hear some amazing speakers at this Conference: Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, Fr. Paul Scalia, Fr. Joseph Mary Brown, Fr. Shannon Collins, Prof. Joseph Pearce, Dale Alequist, to name a few.
Enjoy!

Wow Patricia, thanks for the great suggestions!

Lisa, I hope it goes great! We too will be attending a homeschool conference soon, I was not brave enough to go on my own so my husband and I are having a “day date”. We are starting homeschooling in the fall, and are looking for ideas. Good luck to you.

What!!!  I live in Kansas City!  I would love to go to the conference just to see what this Homeschooling thing is all about.  (two of my four are at the local catholic school) Where is the conference?  Any websites/info on it?
Katie

Hi Katie! You should come! Here’s the link - http://www.kccatholichomeschooler.org/Home - if you make it, come and find me and say hello.

It would be great if you would come, Katie! The web site is http://www.kccatholichomeschooler.org

Oops! Lisa beat me to it! smile Now you have the web site twice!!
The conference is at St. James Academy in Lenexa, KS.

My only suggestion is comfy shoes! You’ll be on your feet all day!
Our is in just 10 days! Hope to see all the New England moms!

Yes, yes, definitely comfy shoes…& a sweater, because sometimes the A/C is blasting in these venues during the summer…& a BIG bag to carry all the goods you will purchase at the vendor fair…& a notebook & pen to take notes from the excellent talks you’ll hear.  ;o)

Thank you for the advice. We are attending the one in New England, I am very excited- I feel like a little school-girl again! :D

We are attending the annual enoch conference in NJ this weekend, with iur ten day old baby!  We have gone for eight years and wouldn’t miss it for the world.  Besides a sweater and a good bag to carry goodies, I would suggest a piece of small luggage with a handle for pulling.  Many conferences have used curricula areas and it helps to have a bigger bag to carry stuff in.  Also, our confence has five talks or workshops going simultaneously.  We look ahead and plan which to attend together, which to attend seperately and which to buy later at the recording area.  I have found that a plan helps us to get the most out of our weekend.

Awesome, Thank you!!

I LOVE the KC conference! It is always so inspiring and so much fun too!! My roommate from college and I always make this our “getaway weekend”. This year my husband and I had hoped to be vendors but scout camp changed our plans wink You will only “see” us in the attendance bags wink Have a wonderful time!

For all these not just visiting but buying- bring a list for each child of needs, interests and struggles. Pray about them and be ready to talk to the vendors about each child separately.
