My Husband's Genius Idea

Once you have a certain number of kids (perhaps one), you come to realization that cups are a problem.
The problem of cups even came up as a topic of discussion in this past weekend’s Homemaking Coffee Talk.
For those who are blissfully ignorant of the cup problem, I’ll walk you through it: A kid drinks from a cup and leaves it on the kitchen counter. Then, 12 seconds later, when she needs another drink, she is not sure which one of the dozens of cups on the counter is hers, and so she gets a new one.
You can imagine what your kitchen counter looks like after a few different kids have been at this for the better part of the day—the cupboard is emptied of all cups and the counters are covered with many times more dirty cups than you have children.
This used to drive my husband crazy. And you know what they say: Insanity is the mother of invention. (What? They don’t? Well, they should.)
Out of my husband’s irritation with disorder came this brilliant idea: a cup holder. He nailed together a few scraps of wood, I painted it and added some initials and ... voila! Our cup problem was solved!
Now when one of our kids has a drink, he places his cup in his designated slot in the drink holder. Then, 35 seconds later, when he needs another drink, he can find and re-use the same cup. See what I mean? Genius!
Our cup holder is a little old now—you can see it’s getting worn. And it hasn’t been kept up to date—it’s missing the bottom two kids. But it’s still the one item in our home that guests are most likely to notice and talk about.
Poor Dan. He built an entire house for crying out loud, and all anyone wants to talk about is his genius cup holder.
But I can’t blame them. I think it’s pretty cool too.
