New Game in Town

The words “hope” and “pro-life” go together. By nature, being a pro-lifer means we see the beauty and uniqueness of every individual. We see the designed-by-God perfection in each human being. And if that isn’t embracing hope, I don’t know what is.
But sometimes it is discouraging to look around and see a nation weighed down too often by anti-life sentiment and legislation. It doesn’t fit with our call, what we know to be Truth.
So it is with renewed joy that we watched a new session begin yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives. After suffering for a while with little to no legislative power, pro-life advocates can celebrate a new body that hails a pro-life majority and a pro-life Speaker of the House.
Two stunning quotes from an article that appeared yesterday at LifeSite News are sticking in my heart still today.
From new Speaker of the House John Boehner, when he accepted an award from the National Right to Life Committee:
“America is a nation that is built on freedom, but without respect for life that freedom is in jeopardy. When we reaffirm our commitment to life we reaffirm our commitment to freedom. I never sought to be recognized as a leader of a movement or wear my pro-life credentials on my sleeve. I just voted for what I thought was right and spoke out on what I thought was right. But, if you believe in the right to life, being quiet isn’t good enough.”
And from Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List:
“The pro-life movement really flexed its muscles in the 2010 election. Many representatives learned the consequences of their vote for a health care bill that included taxpayer funding of abortion when they were thrown out of office by the constituents they betrayed. Those Members have been replaced by authentic pro-life voices that are supported by a strongly pro-life GOP leadership.”
Sure, we have a long way to go. Sure, it’s only the House. But we need to start somewhere — and at least we now have a few allies on Capitol Hill to lead the charge for us.
Hope. Oh yeah. Extra hope. Do you feel it?
