Does anyone know of some practical (and easy/quick to read) resources on NFP and the Church’s stance on NFP that are directed towards men? Although my husband supports me and my decision to use NFP, he doesn’t quite understand the “whys” and the “hows.” While I’ve explained to the best of my ability, I was curious if there might be something out there that would help him understand from a man/husband/father perspective. Thanks for any advice!

This isn’t really a NFP question, but more of a question along the lines of safe supplements to take for anxiety and depression while being open to life. I have an extremely low thyroid function that I’m working hard on getting back in balance with thyroid meds and some kelp. However, I have a lot of anxiety and some mild depression and our attachment therapist told me to go see my ob/gyn for some help if I ever wanted to pursue meds. However, I’m just wondering if there were some safe supplements that I could take for awhile that wouldn’t effect a pregnancy since we are open to life.
I highly recommend a book called The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. It talks about using amino acids and other natural supplements to help with mood disorders such as anxiety, anger, depression, etc. It has helped me tremendously. I have taken them up until I’ve discovered a pregnancy and then stopped when I’ve received a positive test, just to be on the safe side. There’s also a natural supplement called Formula 303 that is calming. The literature I’ve read about Formula 303 says that it is safe to take during pregnancy.
I should say that I currently take a multi-vitamin, fish oil, garlic, cinnamon, chromium picolonate, kelp, and my blood pressure meds, thyroid meds, and metformin for my diabetes.
I would work hard to get the depression (even mild) and anxiety treated before you get pregnant. I was dealing with depression before the birth of my youngest so much so that I was not ovulating. I mentioned this to my ob/gyn and he suggested clomid instead of telling me to treat the depression/anxiety before getting pregnant. You can be “open to life” and avoid a pregnancy—so maybe you need to take something stronger and be careful about conception. I ovulated on my own and conceived intentionally but it was a long road because I went into the pregnancy without adequate treatment and caring for a baby and lack of sleep increase anxiety.
I’m not sure if this would apply to your situation, but sometimes low progesterone can cause major shifts in moods, etc. Is there any way you could see a Creighton doc so they can check your progesterone levels during your cycle to see if you may need some supplements? If you’re in need of progesterone supplements it will make a huge difference with depression/anxiety to have them! Good luck!
Quick question for Marquette users. I am four month postpartum and my cycle has not returned. We have just started using the monitor (roughly a week ago) and I’ve already forgotten to use it two mornings in a row! Since we are using the breastfeeding protocol, does anyone know if I can just trigger the monitor back to day 5 and start over?
When I did that I just tested the next day and then started testing every other day again. As long as you don’t have any mucus signs, I don’t think you need to reset until you get to day 26 (on the monitor). It’s always best to check things with the experts on the online forum.
Ask your doctor about Deplin—my Creighton/NFP only doctor just prescribed it for me while taking Clomid & progesterone to achieve pregnancy. I have been very hesitant about taking any SSRI (Prozac, etc) while trying to get pregnant, but am feeling like I have to do something beyond counseling, etc for the depression. I think it must be pretty new, but it is a just a very specific type of folic acid (hence the prescription) and is totally safe during pregnancy because it is really just a supplement. It is meant to be prescribed with another anti-depressant, but she told me that they have several patients on it alone and are having great results. I just started it and am praying it will help me as well. Prayers for you to find the right answer!
