I am experiencing one of the deadly sins here after hearing about your trip (envy!). So would it be too much to ask for your prayers that I too, could someday go to Israel? I have been enjoying the Bible so much in several Bible studies by Jeff Cavins, that I would love to see “The Fifth Gospel”. My dream is to go with Steve Ray (and my husband as well!) For something a little more altruistic, please pray for my son Michael who will be spending the semester in Rome and is leaving the beginning of February. Thanks!
Off to Israel

On Wednesday of this week, I’ll be able to cross a lifelong dream off of my “some day” list as I depart on a nine-day trip to Israel. I’ll be in the company of nine other Catholic writers as part of a trip arranged by the Catholic Press Association in conjunction with the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.
Our nine-day adventure will take us to many of the highlights of Israel—mentally, as I write this I’m still preparing for all of the surprises, adventures and blessings that will surely find us in the Holy Land. I’m hoping to share this adventure with you, my friends at Faith & Family, by posting at my Facebook and Twitter pages. Because I won’t have my computer with me, I’ve pre-posted some articles here at the blog, but if possible I’ll “pop in” here too while on the road.
My main purpose today is to invite you to share your prayer intentions with me. I will be carrying those as we journey to several very holy sites, and it will be a sincere honor to carry your prayers with me. If you’d prefer to share those anonymously, please feel free to email me at lisahendey@gmail.com and I will add your intentions to my book of prayers.
Also, I know we have some world travelers here, so if any of you have traveled in Israel I’d love your last minute tips and suggestions. I’ll likely be packing tomorrow, so be sure to send hints on what to wear and where to go. We won’t have a great deal of control over our schedule, but I’d love to hear from folks who have experienced this type of a trip in recent years. Finally, please pray for my husband who will be holding down our fort in my absence and for my fellow travelers as we embark on this amazing adventure together.

What a wonderful opportunity, Lisa! I’ve never been to Israel but always wanted to go. My prayer intention on this Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children is that 2012 is the year that America elects representatives to our government who will finally overturn Roe v. Wade and begin to change our culture to one of life rather than one of death. Many blessings to you and the other writers and safe travels!
That’s wonderful! Enjoy! I was lucky enough to go a few years ago. It was end of May and so, so hot. I bet it will still be very warm even this time of year. Also, don’t need to change your money—I did, and it was a hassle, because all the prices were in American dollars, so I should have just stuck with American money! My favorites were Jerusalem and Nazareth, where I’m sure you will spend lots of time, and also the desert and the Dead Sea in the south—so, so beautiful. I wish we had spent a little less time in some of the minor sites and more in Jerusalem—it’s very beautiful, very walkable, and full of interesting little things at every turn. And Nazareth has a beautiful Church with depictions of Mary from all over the world. Also wish I had had a little more spending money and bought more things…..and eaten more local and street food, and not just the meals provided on my tour! I hope you have a beautiful time and I’ll pray for a safe trip. I would like to ask prayers just for me and my family. I have been struggling with depression for a long time and it is so hard on my husband and toddler. Thank you so much.
I was blessed to have made the journey a decade ago. One of my fondest memories was walking the stations of the cross early in the morning in Jerusalem when only the bakers seemed to be up. If the Sisters of the Work are still at St Anne’s in Jerusalem, they are worth a visit as they were able to share so many things with us. I also remember talking with the locals… In shops, or in the courtyards… It’s an amazing place.
Lisa, many prayers for you on this pilgrimage!
Please pray for healing for me from a yet identified form of cancer. I am in the midst of having many tests including a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy on Feb. 1.
Have a wonderful trip. I am anxious to read all about it. Prayers for you and your family at home.
My husband and I just returned in late December from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with our newly-ordained son. Our group was comprised of four other new priests and their families. No doubt, this little fact was the basis for the amazing experience we all had, but there were some other factors that came into play as well. Our tour guide, from Guiding Star tours, a Catholic company, was a university professor and Catholic himself, so we were getting the authentic background information and the right theology to accompany our travels to the holy sites. We spent half our time based in Tiberius and visited the towns in Galilee and then the other half in Jerusalem.
walking to Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the early morning before the sun was up was one of the high points of the trip. I hope you have a priest in your group.
A safe and blessed journey to you all!
