Oh, the Drama!

This week I’m hosting a summer “Drama Camp” at my house.
I call it “camp” because that makes it sound more exciting, but really it’s just me with a mess of kids practicing a play Monday through Friday with a live performance planned for Saturday.
Last year, we did Cyrano de Bergerac and it was tons of fun, so I felt confident leaping into Oliver Twist this year.
One thing I particularly enjoy about doing these plays is the opportunity it affords me to connect with older kids—my own and other people’s.
I always come away impressed. I think we must be doing something right here in our little community of families because these are awfully good kids. I marvel at the rainbow of personalities among them and the different gifts each of them has.
And anyway, the whole gang of them keeps me laughing—our “Artful Dodger” who hasn’t quite mastered the British accent and winds up sounding like he’s from Tennessee, our “Mr. Brumble” who spits fire at Oliver’s famous request for “more gruel,” and an assortment of creative characters who take all manner of liberties with their lines.
I am not a tough director. Within reason, I let them adjust their lines a bit and they have been taking advantage.
This week I am grateful that our summer schedule allows for me to invest in these kinds of big kid relationships. It feels like I’m getting a sneak peek at our future Church. And you know what? The kids are alright.
