Outdoor Spaces

a little inspiration

I love this video put together by a crafty lady who recreated her covered-porch/deck area. Though I don’t have a space quite like this, I found plenty of inspiration. This time of the year, we don’t use our deck quite as much (translated: walk outside and prepare to wilt!), but I might try the shade trick used here, to get a little coverage. Do you enjoy sprucing up a place to just be in your yard? What have you done to make it enjoyable?

Where we usually live, in CA (we are temporarily relocated to VA - a swampy melting pot all its’ own) we can be outdoors pretty much all year, so our back patio/yard is really just another room of the house.  I put out outdoor furniture from Costco that is just like a living room set:  couch, loveseat, chair w/ottoman and coffee table.  We also have a patio dining table where we eat many of our spring and summer dinners.  Given that our home is in the middle of the Mojave Desert, we also put up misters along the length of the patio cover and installed an outdoor ceiling fan to the patio cover, too.  I’m sure our renters are enjoying it.

I wonder what she does when it rains?  I like the idea of an awning, I suppose hers can handle a rainstorm?

My husband built two pergolas, one on our pool deck and the other on our regular deck.  He also built the pool deck, and tore down the railing on our regular deck.  He installed wrap-around benches which offer plenty of seating space.  We are in the midst of growing grape vines over our pergolas.  The pool deck pergola is almost all covered now, but our regular deck isn’t very shaded yet.  The vines are just barely peeking over the top.  It’s really nice when it is warm and sunny, but when it rains, not very practical.  I kind of like sitting outside under a roof when it rains in the summer.  I’ve often thought that an awning would be nice…

I, too, got inspiration from the video.  Our backyard space is mostly an unfinished space.  We put a deck on about three years ago and don’t use it nearly as often as I thought we would - I think some shade would increase our enjoyment and if we could do something about the mosquitos in the evening that would help too.  I have so many ideas to make our outdoors more enjoyable but no funds to carry them out:(  I do love to see or hear about what other people have done though.

Hmm, see I watched the clip & all I could think is, “Oh, the dust & dirt!  Oh, the MOLD!”  grin
(Very pretty color scheme, though.)

I guess I like “pretty for pretty’s sake,” but not when it makes more maintainence work for me, the groundskeeper.  So am I more function over form, then?

Straight up, the most excellent thing we’ve done to be able to enjoy our backyard is purchase these babies: http://www.thermacell.com/mosquito-repellent

One in each corner of our roughly 40’ x 40’ backyard, and even my bug-bait DH can sit out w/a drink & hold hands with me on the deck at night.

I just went over and checked the thermacell page out.  I may have to find a way to obtain some of these.  The bugs are probably the number one reason I don’t like to use our yard!

Pat, I’m pretty sure Home Depot & similar stores carry them…I think there was some big rebate or discounts when we bought our units at the Thermacell site, though, once you hand over your email address, etc.

The Nassau is a very unique and high quality group at a great price. The Nassaumakes the perfect traditional Tropical bedroom. It is available in the white as shown and whitewash stains.

A darling presentation of an uplifting project and the joyful vibes it creates for that family.
I loved the background music, does anyone know who it was?

In case anyone else wants to know…Song was by Twin Sister…found it on her blog.
