Precious Cargo

Dan’s father stopped by this morning with bags of presents for the kids. Stephen just had a birthday and I long ago gave up on trying to convince Grandpa that bringing a present for every one of our kids on every birthday is unnecessary. He likes to do it. He wants to do it. And this Santa-like tradition of his has earned him celebrity status around here.
“Grandpa’s here! Grandpa’s here!” even little Daniel sang out as he hurried down the stairs and rushed out the door to greet his hero this morning.
Grandpa’s presents are quite helpful, actually. He always brings a bit of fun (some new trucks and a Connect Four game this time) and a bit of practicality (notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, and other school supplies this time).
But this is not the only thing grandpas are good for. They are also good for rides in the back of a pick up truck. Dan drives a truck, but the kids know better than to ever ask him for such a ride. With Grandpa, though, you dare ask for the moon because, more often than not, he will deliver.
Safely, of course.
The kids pile into the back of Grandpa’s truck and the big kids hold little ones on their laps. He then makes his way slowly down the driveway and back again. Oh, the thrill! Oh, the joy! Oh, the blessing to have such a Grandpa!
