Playing Dolls
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Tuesday, October 07, 2008 1:00 PM
Okay. When I saw a description of this video clip from the Today Show, I was prepared to be disturbed. Grown women playing with dolls—dressing them, naming them, talking to them, and taking them out in public? It’s creepy, right?
But the whole concept didn’t turn out to be as weird as I anticipated. These women aren’t so much creepy weirdos as they are collectors with an eye for beauty. These expensive dolls really are lifelike and beautiful—I think I might even enjoy holding one.
What I find most fascinating about this phenomenon is the conversation it seems to have inspired about what motherhood can mean to a woman.
“Everybody likes to hold a baby. It makes you feel at peace. It makes you feel calm,” one of the women said.
But Today Show contributor and psychiatrist Dr Gail Salz thinks there’s more at play than just that:
“There’s something else about babies. For many women, whether or not they want children, a baby personifies their genital prowess. It symbolizes their femininity and female power.”
I’m not sure I want to talk about “genital prowess” (where do these people get these terms?) but I am interested in the idea of a baby as a symbol of femininity and female power. Sounds like new feminism to me—the kind that embraces and celebrates all the unique, God-given qualities of women and mothers instead of rejecting, denying, and belittling them.
I don’t usually look to the Today Show for that kind of affirmation, but it is refreshing stuff indeed.
