Popcorn!

A few months ago, I noticed two things – one, that microwavable popcorn was always on my grocery list, and two, that microwavable popcorn isn’t cheap.
So I started doing a little research and decided we’d start popping corn on our own. I was so pleased to buy the five-dollar bag of kernels that I was confident I’d left the world of nuked popcorn behind. We would now have unlimited bowls of popcorn, all for mere pennies a serving.
For a while I tried using my large stock pot, but I could never get the right oil-to-corn ratio, and our popcorn always tasted a bit greasy. Eventually, I settled on this: a good old-fashioned (sorta) popcorn popper, just like the one we had growing up. I ordered the popper, and it came in the mail a few days later.
We have loved it.
It took us a few tries to get the consistency right. If you leave the popper on too long the kernels closest to the heat source get either really crispy or soggy. I find the dichotomy a bit odd. But we have figured it out and I can say everyone seems to love our new little machine.
In fact, my boys give it a five-star rating.
“This thing,” declared one boy, “is not a piece of junk.”
I would add one thing: if you have boys (or perhaps older boys, or perhaps boys with no older sister to balance them out) – keep an eye on them. My boys are very enamored with our popcorn popper, and they’re getting ahead of themselves a bit.
“I wonder what would happen,” mused my nine-year-old, “if you stick a potato in there, with ketchup.”
When he said this, I looked over to see my oldest smiling, with an unsettling sparkle in his eye.
“This is for popcorn ONLY,” I declared. So far, they are not convinced.
