Predictable Moments

I was out running errands today and stopped to grab lunch on the road. It was just me and baby Isabel, and as I was feeding her a businessman about my age was led to the seat next to us.
He commented on the pretty baby and told me his wife was expecting in a few months.
“This will be our fifth,” he said.
“Congratulations,” I said, and then mentioned Isabel was our sixth.
We chatted back and forth for a few minutes—he told me he was one of ten children and that there were seven boys before any girls came along. Impressive!
Then he asked me if we were done and…I didn’t really know what to say. We get asked this question a lot, which is kind of funny because before we had Isabel I don’t feel like I heard the question near as much. Now that we have a girl, maybe people assume we are all set. Either way, I don’t really have a pat answer other than to say “six is a nice number!” That’s non-commital enough I think, not really delving into my fertility mindset one way or the other.
As we finished up our conversation, as the rest of his companions got settled, I started to ask him if he was Catholic, and then stopped short. It’s such a predictable question and I was laughing at myself for wanting to ask! Funny how sometimes we get asked the same questions over and over, and then find ourselves doing the same thing to others!
Anyway, it was nice to meet a fellow at the helm of a large family, and I congratulated him and wished him luck one last time as I headed out of the restaurant and (predictably) climbed into the 12-passenger van.
