Preparing Sunday Night Dinner

Every Sunday I make dinner for my family. The tradition started a couple of summers ago when I bought a new grill. I had everyone over for hamburgers and hot dogs and my Dad joked, “same time next week?”
Now, every Sunday at 6:30 I host dinner for my parents, brother, cousins, sisters, brothers-in-law, and all the kids.
Grocery shopping to feed the family is a challenge for me, since I’m used to buying food for just one. I stare blankly at the bags of potatoes wondering if I should buy the 5 pound bag or the 10 pound bag. After deciding that more is better I ponder my meat selection. Is a 7 pound pork loin enough for 17 people? I clearly look lost because the butcher asks if I need any help.
I always cook way too much food. It’s not uncommon that Alison goes home with an entire tray of food that could feed her family for the next two nights or I eat leftovers all. week. long.
Although I haven’t mastered the appropriate portions for a big group, I have become more daring in my menu choices. When I try something new I measure success on whether the kids actually eat it or whether my Dad has seconds.
Last week I made Roasted Pork Loin, mashed potatoes, corn, and applesauce. I made a few variations to the pork recipe. Instead of a garlic paste, I just finely chopped the garlic and I used fresh rosemary instead of dried rosemary. I took the advice of one reviewer and poured the white wine over the pork before cooking. The aroma was lovely and everyone commented about the yummy smell when they came in the house. My mom made gravy from the meat drippings (I haven’t mastered that skill yet).
What is on your menu for tomorrow night? I’m going grocery shopping today so I need some ideas. I want to hear your recipes, your successes, and even your menu mishaps.
