Pretty Baskets Full of Love

Thinking ahead to make thoughtful gift-giving a habit

As I was savoring my sweet treats this week the thought occurred to me that I would like to start a gift basket closet.

No, not for me, though don’t think for a minute I’m above it.

Rather, I want to create a gift basket closet that resembles those gift closets that I’ve heard some of you super organized gals possess. You know: the ones that hold oodles of presents already wrapped for those unexpected moments that call for a ready-to-go gift? I want to do that but in a more basket-y kind of way.

I think this would be just perfect for those of us on a budget. There are so many places to procure gift basket fillers for pennies. Goodwill, and other thrift shops, regularly stock cute baskets. Hand over a few quarters and you’ve got that taken care of.

Getting your hands on basket stuffers should be pretty simple, as well. Make a small sacrifice and instead of using them yourself, start collecting those wonderful freebies that are occasionally placed into the bottom of your shopping bags or given to you by motels and hotels. I know I have been guilty in the past of tossing perfectly lovely samples in an effort to keep the clutter at bay.

Ooh, and what about those precious sacramentals that are delivered in the mail occasionally? Don’t worry, I would never throw them in the trash but I have to admit that many of those lovely extra medals and rosaries spend far too much time collecting dusk in the corner. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put them to use by decorating our baskets with them?

We can also keep our eyes out for coupons and those free trial offers that can be found in our mailboxes, email inboxes, newspapers and magazines. By investing just a moment or two of our time each week I suspect we could quickly fill our gift basket coffers.

These small efforts will put us well on our way to having a generous collection of charming goods from which to select, made up of darling-yet-superfluous items we have on hand or bought and paid for using only a bit of pocket money.

So, as I embark on this gift basket closet adventure, please tell me: What is the single most thrilling thing you’ve ever been blessed to receive in a gift basket? If I have any hope of ever coming close to being as awesome of a gift basket designer as the Pampering Angels I need to start doing my research now! I, for one, am always especially excited to receive candles, chocolates and spa items. What about you?

Thanks, pretty ladies! Take care!
